JOB DESCRIPTIONAPPLY Job Summary:
Develop designs for machinery and machinery components, including radial/axial stages, shafts, casings, seals, piping, etc. for a wide variety of machinery and test rig applications; utilize analysis tools such as finite element analysis and computational fluid dynamics analysis to verify and improve machine designs; prepare and/or run models of fluid handling machinery and piping systems to identify behaviors, responses to inputs, performance values, and changes with operating conditions; assist in the development of software and diagnostic tools to enhance data collection and analysis, machinery system modeling, machinery problem solving, and the design of improved fluid handling machinery and systems; lead laboratory research tasks required by clients and directed at finding solutions and advancements for fluid handling machinery; independently write technical reports, proposals, and technical presentations; regularly participate in and publish at conferences and other events to actively promote SwRI business; manage multi-person project teams to accomplish large project design/analysis/testing tasks; provide technical leadership and mentoring to junior engineering staff; develop and cultivate opportunities for funding in existing and new turbomachinery applications.
Requires a BS, MS or PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering with at least a 3.2 GPA. Must have 3-15 years of postgraduate/industrial experience. Candidates with design experience with rotating machinery and associated ancillary systems are highly preferred, including experience with aerodynamic and/or mechanical design methods, CAD modeling, and analysis tools for design (finite element analysis, computational fluid dynamics analysis, etc.); must be familiar with common turbomachinery materials and manufacturing methods; experience with evaluation and analysis of problems in turbomachinery and associated plant systems; basic understanding of gas turbine, compressor, and pump station operation is required; must be able to prepare and/or run finite element and rotordynamic models of turbomachinery to identify behaviors, responses to inputs, performance values and changes with operating conditions; must be familiar with turbomachinery research in the laboratory/field to perform instrumentation and testing required by clients; must be able to conduct data collection and analysis to perform performance and mechanical evaluation of equipment to provide recommendations or possible solutions for improvements in systems' operation; writing and presentation skills for technical reports, papers, proposals and technical presentations for client meetings and conferences is required; must be able to manage large projects, including budget management and supervision of technicians and junior engineers; must be able to interact with clients and develop funding opportunities. Travel to client sites and other locations. A valid/clear driver's license is required.
