The clinical nurse specialist (CNS) is an advance practice nurse (APN) who is a clinical leader for a program or area of nursing practice within the WellStar Healthcare System (WHS).
The advanced knowledge and skills required for this role include clinical expertise in a focus area, evidence-based practice, collaboration, consultation, education, mentoring, and change leadership. The CNS role is to integrate care across the WHS continuum by impacting three areas of focus: patient/family, nurses and nursing practice, and the organization/system. The CNS and the Nurse Manager are partners in leading the nursing clinical practice area. The CNS coordinates and guides clinical activities/projects of nurses within a practice area. The CNS is accountable for collaborating with members of the health care team to design, implement, and measure safe, cost-effective, evidence-based care strategies. The CNS is responsible for maintaining contemporary knowledge and competencies that contribute to the advancement of the practice of nursing at the unit/system, local, state and/or national and international level.

Required Minimum Education: Masters degree in Nursing required with a bachelors degree in nursing required; current, active, unrestricted RN license in state of Georgia from an accredited college/university and certification as a clinical nurse specialist from the American Nurses Credential Center or approved national governing body.
Required Minimum Experience: Must meet Ga. Board of Nursing requirements to qualify as CNS which requires 500 hours of practice as CNS. Prefer candidates with 2+ years in an acute care setting practicing as a CNS. Clinical knowledge in specialty area. If hired in area with a substantially different clinical knowledge set, the candidate will be expected to demonstrate clinical expertise in the practice area within 6 months to a 1-year time frame. Certification in specialty area preferred.
Required Minimum Skills: Advanced critical thinking skills. Ability to identify improvement in clinical operations and implement change and willingness to challenge established ways of doing things in a constructive way. Ability to lead, mentor and develop staff. Exemplifies a strong, positive attitude toward internal and external customers and continuous service improvement. Excellent conflict resolution skills. Has well developed diplomatic, tact and listening skills. Adept at using technology as a tool to support education. Uses quality improvement methodologies including but not limited to: PDCA, FMEA, RCA to evaluate system failures and patient safety practices. Skilled at delegation, supervision and evaluation of care given.
