Position Summary:

Berkeley Labs Environment, Health, & Safety Division (EHS) has an opening for a RadCon Supervisor to oversee 8 technicians including a small group of Radiation Control Technicians (RCTs), an Instrumentation Technician, and a Dosimetry Technician. This position performs the function and duties of a standard RadCon Tech supervisor. Primarily, the work activities will consist of supporting operational aspects of implementing, coordinating and overseeing the LBNL Radiation Protection Program in the field, supporting routine activities, job coverage, as well as the operational aspects of a calibration lab and the dosimetry office. This person will be providing technical health physics leadership, programmatic and project support, and has general responsibility for radiation protection in assigned areas and activities at LBNL. This position reports to the Technical Support Manager in the Environment, Waste and Radiation Protection Department (EWRP).

Specific Responsibilities:

*

Provide direct supervision for the non-exempt Radiation Control Technicians (RCTs), Instrumentation Technician, Dosimetry Technician, and on occasion other assigned staff such as subcontractors.
*

Provide hands-on training and conduct cross training to assigned staff and new hires.
*

Use data management systems to review, update, and document work activities.
*

Prioritize tasks to ensure availability of personnel, equipment and supplies to support continuous operations.
*

Perform and/or assist in developing work planning and control (WPC), survey plans, radiological authorizations (i.e RWPs) and other technical work documents as needed.
*

Evaluate and implement all required safety practices including surveys, work control, dosimetry, posting/labeling, training, instrument calibrations and associated documentation.
*

Conduct work in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.

Additional Desired Responsibilities:

*

Perform and assist in managing services and subcontractor personnel.
*

Conduct and/or support assessments, audits and other measures needed regarding RPG.
*

Assist in the planning of complex work activities.
*

Assist with response to emergencies at other laboratory locations, if required.
*

Work with peers, both within and outside of the EHS, on special projects.
*

Interface with Research and EHS customers to assure timely, effective, and efficient calibration of their instruments.
*

Maintain a working knowledge of the various database tools used and effectively use them to perform and document all required data.

Required Qualifications:

*

Bachelors Degree and/or at least 15 years of broad working knowledge and experience in radiation/health physics programs with 5 years of related progressive experience as a qualified DOE/NRC 3.1/DOD-qualification radiation control technician (RCT)/ Health Physics Technician (HPT)/ Engineering Laboratory Technician (ELT), or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Demonstrated experience in supervising exempt and/or non-exempt staff with demonstrated ability to provide clear and concise direction of work duties to a diverse group of individuals.
*

Ability to apply comprehensive radiation safety, radiation measurement, dose management, and radioisotope handling principles in general assignments.
*

Demonstrated extensive technical expertise with full and comprehensive knowledge of other related disciplines, e.g., dosimetry, instrumentation calibration.
*

Experience in developing radiation protection procedures and technical work documents, including providing technical advice and training instructions.
*

Experience in developing and preparing procedures and other services for the purpose of achieving radiation safety.
*

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with a wide variety of diverse individuals. Proficient computer skills.
*

Demonstrated ability to work independently and lead team of other Radiation Protection Technicians given broad and general program/project directions.
*

Incumbent must be able to perform the physical requirements of the position including: routinely lift and transport 40 lbs, frequently bend and stoop, stand and walk for 4-6 hours per day. Incumbent will be required to successfully pass a routine medical examination as well as successfully pass applicable training including Respirator Fit Testing, formal HAZWOPER training, and other related emergency response training.

Additional Desired Qualifications:

*

Knowledge of the Quality Assurance requirements in the operation of calibration facilities including training, procedures, records and quality control.
*

Knowledge of the electronics associated with the calibration systems/components and operation of these calibration systems.
*

Knowledge of dosimetry programs.

*

Experience in the application of DOT and IATA regulations.
*

Previous experience developing and providing technical advice, instructions, developing and preparing operational and quality assurance procedures, and other services for the purpose of achieving radiation safety.
*

Experience working in a research facility.
*

Technical certification desirable.

Salary Range: $6,518 - $8,964 monthly.
