The Advanced Sensors and Techniques Group operates the Lincoln Space Surveillance Complex (LSSC) that comprises of the Millstone deep-space satellite tracking radar, the Haystack Ultra-wideband Satellite Imaging Radar (HUSIR) and the Haystack Auxiliary imaging radar (HAX). All these radar are remotely controlled from the Lexington Space Situational Awareness Center (LSSAC) which serves as a data processing and fusion node for the LSSC and other ground and space-based space surveillance sensors. Together, the LSSC and LSSAC serve as an operational test bed for space situational awareness technologies and provide access to a rich set of radar and optical data. The group's current research and development efforts focus on problems such as tracking and identification of newly launched satellites, tracking and discrimination of satellites in geosynchronous clusters, automated radar image exploitation, close approach monitoring and collision warning, applications of mullti-sensor data fusion, and decision support. The group is also developing a net-centric, service-oriented information system

Will work in a team environment to address a broad range of technical questions of importance to the U.S. use of space. Technical areas include development of advanced sensors and techniques to benefit U.S. space situational awareness, space based intelligence, and surveillance and reconnaissance. Work involves hardware development, data analysis, mathematical modeling and software simulation of tracking systems, including space vehicles and their subsystems as well as radars, optical sensors and integrated networks for surveillance of the space environment.


Ph.D in Physics, Electrical Engineering, radar astronomy, or related field is required. MS degree with five or more years of relevant experience may be considered in lieu of Ph.D.

Candidate must show demonstrated competence in scientific writing and/or development and presentation of technical materials. The candidate will need to be able to clearly present concepts to a wide spectrum of audiences.

Desired Skills:



Experience with system design, development, and experimental techniques is required. Excellent grasp of electromagnetics, principles of radar systems, signal processing, and astrodynamics is strongly desired. Strong modeling and analysis skills are essential. Excellent communication and briefing skills are required. In addition, a cross-disciplinary background or other indicators of an ability to quickly learn new fields is highly desired. Candidates that demonstrate a combined background of working complex problems at the technically detailed level as well as complex problems at the system level will have a strong advantage.



Experience in one or more of the following areas is highly desired: development of advanced sensors, development and execution of sensor data collection experiments, active engineering participation in a hardware development project for a space surveillance sensor or space system, analysis of large data sets, detailed performance modeling of sensor systems, development or refinement of signal/image processing algorithms, mathematical modeling of complex systems (particularly as related to astrodynamics), development and application of estimation techniques (particularly as related to astrodynamics), or systems analysis/engineering.
