JOB DESCRIPTIONAPPLY Radiation Oncology Nurse
Essential Job Duties:
Provides and coordinates professional nursing care to radiation therapy patients by:
Reviewing patient files prior to the initial examination to ensure completion of pertinent patient history and all associated medical documentation necessary for optimum evaluation prior to treatment.
Explaining and instructing patients and/or family members/care givers treatment procedures and nursing care; also communicating with them on an ongoing basis to help them address emotional as well as physical obstacles.
Completing patient assessment by obtaining past and present medical history, conducting a physical assessment, documenting current physical and emotional status, then planning and implementing a plan of care.
Assessing, on a continual basis, the patient's progress by observing and evaluating patient symptoms and response to treatment, determining patient's progress, recognizing side effects and/or problems and taking corrective action as indicated or directed.
Administering medications, starting/monitoring IV's and blood products, performing CPR or other emergency treatments and assisting the physician with other procedures such as: in-department brachytherapy, biopsies, seroma aspirations, etc.
Assessing safe pain control, sedation and monitoring techniques of those patients in need of that intervention.
Conducting a complete discharge assessment to determine post treatment physical, emotional, nutritional and psycho-social status offering appropriate solution and referrals as indicated and completing a discharge summary.
Coordinates and ensures the educational needs of the patient, family and team members are met by providing individual patients and family members with information related to illness and treatment and maintaining teaching material supplies
Maintain current knowledge of new oncology developments, procedures, techniques and associated nursing skills (such as High Dose Rate Brachytherapy, Stereotactic Radiotherapy, and Prostate Seed Implants).
Conduct ongoing interdepartmental, nursing unit and community in-services regarding radiation oncology.

Knowledge & Skills:
Possesses knowledge of cancer disease process, response to treatments and side-effect identification and management, with particular emphasis as these relate to radiation oncology.
Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of oncology nursing care with specialized expertise in understanding radiation therapy treatment modalities and procedures.
Demonstrates leadership skills required to elicit cooperation and support from others and to interact tactfully with healthcare professionals and various Hospital staff.
Demonstrates the communication skills necessary to interact effectively with patients, families, physicians and various Hospital team members.
*License or eligibility for licensure as a registered nurse in Indiana and current OCN certification.
*A minimum of two years of oncology nursing experience, with radiation oncology experience, is preferred.
*Requires a current BLS certification and a willingness to complete the CPR instructor program (in order to assist with yearly department team member certification).
