The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of a nursing program from an accredited school of nursing; license or eligibility for licensure as a registered nurse in Indiana and current OCN certification. A minimum of two years of oncology nursing experience, with radiation oncology experience, is preferred. Requires a current BLS certification and a willingness to complete the CPR instructor program (in order to assist with yearly department team member certification). A team player, ideally some oncology experience, IV experience and strong clinical skills. Experience with radiation is highly desired.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

*

The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of a nursing program from an accredited school of nursing; license or eligibility for licensure as a registered nurse in Indiana and current OCN certification. A minimum of two years of oncology nursing experience, with radiation oncology experience, is preferred. Requires a current BLS certification and a willingness to complete the CPR instructor program (in order to assist with yearly department team member certification).

KNOWLEDGE also communicating with them on an ongoing basis to help them address emotional as well as physical obstacles.
*

Completing patient assessment by obtaining past and present medical history, conducting a physical assessment, documenting current physical and emotional status, then planning and implementing a plan of care.
*

Assessing, on a continual basis, the patient's progress by observing and evaluating patient symptoms and response to treatment, determining patient's progress, recognizing side effects and/or problems and taking corrective action as indicated or directed.
*

Administering medications, starting/monitoring IV's and blood products, performing CPR or other emergency treatments and assisting the physician with other procedures such as: in-department brachytherapy, biopsies, seroma aspirations, etc.
*

Assessing safe pain control, sedation and monitoring techniques of those patients in need of that intervention.
*

Conducting a complete discharge assessment to determine post treatment physical, emotional, nutritional and psychosocial status offering appropriate solution and referrals as indicated; completing a discharge summary.

ENSURES APPROPRIATE AND ACCURATE DOCUMENTATION BY:

Completing, monitoring and maintaining the necessary patient charts and files in accordance with established procedures and regulatory guidelines.

Completing discharge summary on all patients upon completion of treatment.

COORDINATES AND ENSURES THE EDUCATIONAL NEEDS OF THE PATIENT, FAMILY AND TEAM MEMBERS ARE MET BY

Providing individual patients and family members with information related to illness and treatment and maintaining teaching material supplies.Maintaining current knowledge of new oncology developments, procedures, techniques and associated nursing skills (such as High Dose Rate Brachytherapy, Stereotactic Radiotherapy, and Prostate Seed Implants).

Conducting ongoing interdepartmental, nursing unit and community in-services regarding radiation oncology.

SUPPORTS THE DEPARTMENT BY:

Monitoring and maintaining adequate inventories of all nursing-related supplies and materials, while being mindful of cost controls and all other department staff.
*

Working closely with the Clinical Manager to ensure programs and services are delivered in a manner to maximize quality, productivity and financial performance.
*

Enforcing Hospital-approved infection control policies and assisting the department OSHA officer, as necessary, in staff education.
*

Serving as a resource person to Radiation Therapists and ancillary nursing personnel on procedures requiring professional nursing expertise.
*

Participating in the development and revision of assessment tools and patient teaching materials to improve patient knowledge and understanding and minimize fears.
*

Being involved in Hospital and community programs to raise awareness of cancer prevention and early detection sponsored by the Regional Cancer Center.
