Perform duties pertaining primarily to estimating the quantity, size and type of concrete reinforcing steel and related products for construction projects in accordance with customer plans and specifications.
Duties & Responsibilities
The incumbent's primary responsibility is for an accurate estimate of required concrete reinforcing steel bars and related accessory products for specific construction projects. Projects are assigned to the incumbent by the Sales Manager. The priority of a project is determined by three characteristics: due date of the project bid, customers' relations to the company, general characteristics of the rebar needed for the project. These factors, along with guidance from Sales Manager guide the incumbent in performing estimates in the order and time frame that bids are required by sales management. Work is generally regulated within instructions and polices with review of progress. The incumbent typically reports to the Sales Manager.
The incumbent should possess broad working knowledge of reinforcing steel used in concrete construction involving the use of drawings, standards, building codes and Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute accepted methods and practices. Incumbent should have previous qualifying experience of five or more years as a Senior Detailer, or has shown ability to perform at the required levels of this position. Previous qualifying experience on related work or lesser jobs such as rebar detailing of a minimum of five years plus an orientation period for familiarization with: techniques of various architects, engineers and contractors shop procedures. The incumbent must possess a minimum two-year degree in a field of drafting and/or engineering relative to the industry. A four-year degree is preferred.
Prepares quantity and material take-off from customer's plans, specifications, instructions, and other available data to determine quote information. Has mastered all detailing complexities of structures and performs a complete diversified range of estimating activities involving ascertaining any unique aspects of the project; studying broad range of specifications to determine proper code application and any usual steel requirements. Proceeds alone on most projects and seeks technical assistance from Rebar Estimator II or Sales Manager only as necessary on more complex work. Incumbent will have moderately complex work requiring intense knowledge and use of established practices and procedures combined with moderate judgment. Works with Contract Sales Representative, customers, and may visit job sites for troubleshooting.
Consult with sales, contractor, architect, engineer or customer as necessary to ensure complete understanding of job requirements. Break job down into appropriate workable components; visualize standard details not covered by data furnished. Write up change order sheets from approved requests and revise estimates accordingly.
Occasionally the incumbent may be required to calculate complex dimensions and technical specifications to develop and prepare detail placement drawings, weigh material, extend and price for small jobs to expedite information to preferred customers.
Misapplication of codes and standards, quantity take-off errors, late accomplishment of estimate and omission of pertinent factors may result in serious adverse effects such as losses due to excessive under bidding, excessively high selling price, missing bid deadline, loss of contract, or may have adverse effect on customer relations.
