Job Description
The Charge Nurse is assigned to a designated clinical area to assist in assuring a patientfamily focused environment. Key role responsibilities include: coordinating patient throughput, demonstrating high standards of quality patient care, holding care providers accountable to clinical and service standards. Demonstrates and coaches others to utilize critical thinking skills. Works under the direction of the Patient Care Manager Assistant Manager to develop, implement and evaluate systems that promote cost effective, quality patient care. Is a frontline member of the management team. Quality patient care is defined as care that is safe, effective, efficient, timely, equitable, patient centered, and evidence based. Staff role must perform the duties and responsibilities of a Charge Nurse at least 80% of their overall time as defined by the key functions listed below bKey Functions and Expected Performances:b 1. bLeadership: Managing Vision amp; Purpose, Motivating amp; Influencing, Experience.b a. Partners with the healthcare team for day-to-day execution of the mission and strategic plan of the organization. b. Participates in projectson-going work activities (timelines, work plans, deliverables) aligned with strategic plan and vision. c. Recognizes and rewards desired performance. Supports retention of staff through the use of techniques consistent with Elevate framework. 2. bCommunication: Active Listening and Communicating Clearly (verbal amp; written).b a. Embodies VUMC Credo to maintain an environment of trust, fairness, consistency and confidentiality with team members and with internal and external customers. b. Listens and seeks clarification through Elevate rounding. Completes rounding log and uses findings to develop solutions to identified issues within scope of accountability. c. Shares knowledge with others within work groupdepartment. Represents needs and interests of direct reports to all levels of the leadership structure. Communicates effectively orally and in writing. 3. bStandards amp; Accountability: Accountability, Clinical Quality Management and Service Orientation.b a. Supervises day to day performance of staff through ongoing assessment and coaching to achieve goals. Contributes to formal evaluation of staff. b. Supports the delivery of quality patient care by holding staff accountable to established patient care and regulatory standards. Interprets policies and procedure to nursing staff and patientsfamilies. c. Makes changes in clinical assignments based on patient care needs and demonstrated staff competencies. d. Promotes a safe, therapeutic, customer-friendly environment. Responds promptly to patient, family and staff concerns seeking to bring issues to resolution. Provides feedback to patient care team regarding issues. e. Demonstrates clinical knowledge needed to coach staff on day-to-day activities. Pursues continuous learning to gain additional knowledge in area of clinical specialty. f. Interacts effectively with members of the health care team and ancillary departments to monitor and achieve quality patient outcomes. Supports evidence based changes to clinical practice in pursuit of quality patient outcomes Uses data to monitor established internal and external benchmarks. Uses appropriate processes and models to monitor and proactively manage risk. Ensures that care is safe, effective, efficient, timely, equitable, patient centered, and evidenced based. g. Exercises problem solving skills to optimize patient flow while maintaining quality patient care. Collaborates with healthcare team regarding bed management to ensure appropriate patient placement based on clinical needs. Outpatientprocedural: Measures and contributes to improvement in patient access, cycle times, and patient wait times. h.
