JOB DESCRIPTIONAPPLY POSITION DESCRIPTION: Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has an opening for a Research Associate position in Emeryville, CA.
Perform microbiological work such as growth, maintenance, storage, and documentation of bacterial, yeast, and fungal cultures. Follow the current established SOPs for cloning synthetic DNA molecules and for large DNA construct assembly. Interact with the Instrumentation support group to optimize DNA construction process efficiency and throughput. Perform molecular biology techniques including genomic DNA/plasmid preparation, oligo/primer design, PCR, DNA gel electrophoresis, restriction digestion, ligation, transformation, conjugation, cloning, DNA sequencing (including Sanger, Nextera/MiSeq, etc.), and plasmid/gene copy number quantization. Perform semi-routine molecular biology techniques including combinatorial DNA assembly techniques, such as type IIs (e.g. Golden Gate) and flanking homology (e.g., yeast TAR cloning, Gibson and other chew-back) methods, mRNA isolation and quantification (including RNA-seq), and genome integrations and modifications in various organisms (including E. coli, S. cerevisiae, P. putida, and S. venezualae). Provide routine data analysis from the above listed experiments. Provide preliminary data synthesis for use in presentations and publications. Prepare laboratory notebooks, technical reports, summaries, protocols and quantitative analyses. Exercise judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action.
REQUIREMENTS: Employer will accept a Masters degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, or related field and 6 months of experience in the position offered or in a biology-related occupation.
Education or experience must include
Microbiology skills: bacterial and yeast strain storage protocols, aseptic and sterile techniques, bacterial and yeast plating methods (streak, spread, pour, replica), enumerating bacteria (serial dilution and using a spectrophotometer), preparation of growth media (including with antibiotics), growth on selective media, use of biological safety cabinets.
Biochemistry and Cell & Molecular Biology skills: DNA extraction, plasmid DNA preparation, restriction enzyme digests, PCR, agarose gel electrophoresis.
Extensive successful experience working in a production-environment microbiology laboratory strictly adhering to established standards and procedures, and completing a high sample volume in a short time period, including demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment to monitor, control, and assess experimental conditions, sample quality, and instrument function.
Experience with evaluating, acquiring, maintaining and repairing laboratory equipment and instruments for biology laboratories, and maintaining accurate and current inventory of supplies and reorder supplies as needed.
Knowledge of lab and workplace safety requirements.
Demonstrated successful experience serving a large and culturally diverse customer group, soliciting their feedback and adjusting services to meet their needs.
Demonstrated successful experience planning and implementing complex projects or events, including in a biology lab environment.
Demonstrated business acumen: demonstrated ability to represent employers to vendors in order to generate positive business outcomes, and develop positive business relationships.
Demonstrated success in supervision, and, teaching or training, including training and mentoring new hires and successful experience using and instructing others to use custom software.
Successful experience writing protocols / instructional documents.
Demonstrated successful written and oral communication of biological and operational concepts, along with demonstrated ability to prepare and deliver presentations to groups of up to 100.
Strong computer skills, especially office-type word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation applications, and web based data systems.
