JOB DESCRIPTIONLeidos Biomedical Research, Inc. (LBRI), a wholly owned subsidiary of Leidos, operates the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research (FNLCR). FNLCR is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). It is the only FFRDC dedicated to biomedical research. Through its status as an FFRDC, FNLCR provides NCI and others with a unique national resource to accelerate the development and delivery of effective preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic products for cancer and AIDS.
The breadth of FNLCR s activities spans the research and development spectrum, including investigator-initiated, hypothesis-driven research into cancer and AIDS; advanced technology programs focused on genetics and genomics, proteins and proteomics, imaging, nanotechnology, bioinformatics, and laboratory animal sciences; clinical operations in support of NCI and National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID)-sponsored clinical trials, as well as NCI drug discovery and development efforts; and management and operations of biopharmaceutical development and manufacturing programs under current Good Manufacturing Practice conditions for NCI and NIAID. Administrative, procurement, financial, safety, and facilities support is provided to these R&D activities through state-of-the-art business processes. LBRI has approximately 1,900 employees and manages an annual operating budget of approximately $450M.

The Cancer Research Technology Program (CRTP) develops and implements emerging technology, cancer biology expertise and research capabilities to accomplish NCI research objectives. The CRTP is an outward-facing, multi-disciplinary hub purposed to enable the external cancer research community. The CRTP provides dedicated Core Service to the Center for Cancer Research (CCR). The dedicated units provide electron microscopy, protein characterization, protein expression, optical microscopy and genetics. These research efforts and support are an integral part of CCR at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research (FNLCR). CRTP scientists also work collaboratively with intramural NCI investigators to provide research technologies and expertise.
The CCR Sequencing Facility (SF) has been established by CCR to manage the operation of multiple platforms for next-generation and third-generation sequencing in support of NCI investigators. This is a unique matrix organization that pulls in capabilities from the Advanced Biomedical Computational Center (ABCC), Quality Management (QM) and the Cancer Research Technology Program (CRTP) Genomics Laboratory.
The Research Associate II will: 1) work with SF Director, PacBio group leader, technical and QM staff to develop, implement and perform laboratory processes in support of the Pacific Biosciences SMRT sequencer and Illumina Sequencing Laboratory, 2) coordinate with SF, QM and Genomics Laboratory TDA (Technology Development and Automation) staff to implement high throughput sample preparation processes into PacBio/Illumina workflow, 3) coordinate with SF, QM and Pacific Biosciences to implement updates to equipment, chemistry and processes, and 4) identify, research, optimize and implement new processes or technologies that serve to improve data quality or efficiency of production pipeline.
