RESEARCH ASSOCIATE PHYSICS

JOB ID 808 DATE POSTED 09/10/2016

Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy s Office of Science. Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings world-class facilities and expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied science from the birth of our universe to the sustainable energy technology of tomorrow. We operate cutting-edge large-scale facilities for studies in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, applied science, and a wide range of advanced technologies. The Laboratory's almost 3,000 scientists, engineers, and support staff are joined each year by more than 4,000 visiting researchers from around the world. Our award-winning history, including seven Nobel Prizes, stretches back to 1947, and we continue to unravel mysteries from the nanoscale to the cosmic scale, and everything in between. Brookhaven is operated and managed by Brookhaven Science Associates, which was founded by the Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, and Battelle, a nonprofit applied science and technology organization.

Organizational Overview

Brookhaven National Laboratory is a nonprofit research and development institution whose purpose is to advance ideas and knowledge through a multidisciplinary program of basic and applied research. The BNL Physics Department currently has a full time opportunity for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant.

The BNL Physics Department furthers understanding of the physics of nuclear matter under extreme conditions through research at BNL s Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and by participation in the heavy-ion program of the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. For research at RHIC, one group in the Department supports the STAR experiment and another supports the PHENIX experiment and its anticipated upgrade, sPHENIX. The two currently operating experiments are each run by a collaboration of over 500 physicists, and have been taking data since 2000, with a steady output of major discoveries on the properties of the ultra-hot, ultra-dense matter produced in nuclear collisions. Parallel investigations have elucidated information about the spin structure of the proton. The sPHENIX upgrade will bring to RHIC capabilities for full jet reconstruction and Upsilon spectroscopy, enabling an investigation of the dynamics underlying the unique properties of the produced matter.

The Physics Department at BNL invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant with outstanding credentials in Relativistic Heavy Ion physics.

Position Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The position will involve heavy-ion research with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC and also work toward the anticipated sPHENIX experiment at RHIC, with approximately a 50/50 balance of effort between the two. The focus of both will be multi-scale observables as a way to investigate the dynamics underlying the properties of the quark-gluon plasma.

Position Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

* Must have a Ph.D. nuclear physics.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

* Strong computing and/or detector skills and a strong track record of excellent physics research in relevant areas.

Other Information (Security Clearance, drivers license, use of private car, location, travel requirements)

* BNL policy requires that research associate appointments be made to individuals who have received their doctorate within the past five years.

* Requires travel, including foreign travel.
