JOB DESCRIPTIONAPPLY Research Computing Administrator:
The Research Computing Administrator reports directly to both Executive Administrators of the departments of Ecology & Evolution and Organismal Biology & Anatomy. The Research Computing Administrator plays a role in support of research and scholarship with the large-scale and high-performance computational needs of faculty and researchers. Will anticipate, define, and respond to academic and research computing and infrastructure needs that are aligned with departmental efforts. Work to ensure all academic systems and services are designed, deployed, and managed in an appropriate manner; lend perspective and expertise to faculty and other researchers. Establish and maintain appropriate internal and vendor relationships, and serve as a liaison with other IT units on campus to facilitate computation and data storage.
Install and maintain servers, server operating systems, and system applications (Unix/Linux, Windows, Mac). Develop programs and scripts when possible to automate routine system processes. Install and maintain back up systems, manage and monitor the backup of Departments' research data. Implement systems security, automate monitoring. Perform evaluation of severity and applicability of software updates. Provide network administration for all users in both Departments. Maintain and update Departments' web servers, websites, and Wiki sites. Administer MySQL databases and Samba file servers.
Perform and oversee hardware upgrades and installation. Respond to critical equipment/operational needs during regular and off hours. The candidate for this job will be supplied with a cell phone/text messaging device, and will share on-call responsibility during regular and off hours with other members of the E&E/OBA IS & desktop support group. Monitor server room temperatures.
Work with departmental IS team to oversee all hard- and software purchases; maintain tagged inventory of displays, printers, computers. Maintain database of current and disposed property. Maintain written documentation for Departments' IS policies and procedures. Implement BSD and ITS policies. Responsible for maintaining current passwords and access to departmental IS resources, and ensuring that departmental executive administrators have current and updated access to all resources.
Keep abreast of innovation in security, infrastructure, high performance and scalable computing, virtualization technologies, and related research computational methods; and fosters, maintains, and expands existing relationships with other research.
