Job Description

We are currently seeking a Research Environmental Engineer to work in our Air Quality Engineering (AQE) group within our Environmental, Engineering and Economics Division. The selected candidate will work in an office environment to provide technical program support for government and commercial clients including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Office of Air Quality Planning and Standards (OAQPS) and Office of Atmospheric Programs (OAP) and clients abroad (e.g., government agencies in China and in the United Arab Emirates). Minimal travel is expected (0-10 percent of time).


* Information gathering and data analysis

* Technical and regulatory writing

* Assessment of the performance and costs of air pollution control equipment and emissions monitoring methods.

* Design and development of computer spreadsheets and databases to manipulate/analyze data and summarize/present information

* Development of emissions inventories for hazardous air pollutants, greenhouse gases (GHGs), and criteria air pollutants

* Evaluation of compliance with domestic and international environmental rules

* Review and assessment of international air quality policies, programs, and regulations

* Application of scientific analysis skills to research various types of industrial processes, associated emissions control system design/operation/costs, and environmental regulatory requirements

* Evaluation of options for reducing GHG emissions from industrial sources

* Application and interpretation of standard scientific or engineering theories, concepts, and techniques in industrial processes; understanding of process byproducts and associated emissions

* Lead and/or assist in preparation of competitive project/contract proposals

* Lead projects of moderate complexity; communicate directly with clients


* BS in Chemical or Environmental Engineering (or related engineering/science degree) with 12 years of related experience or a Master s degree with 9 years of related experience.

* Strong experience with air quality and climate change (GHG) issues

* Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills

* Demonstrated technical writing ability (writing sample will be requested from candidates interviewed)

* Computer spreadsheet and database analytical skills

* Project management experience

* Flexibility to work collaboratively as part of a program/project team, and motivation to work independently as needed

* To qualify, applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States and should not require now, or in the future, sponsorship for employment visa status.

Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge/experience within one or more of the following areas:

* Electric utilities and/or combustion processes

* Forest products (pulp and paper, wood panel products)

* Metals or minerals manufacturing

* Oil and natural gas, petroleum refineries, and/or chemical industries

* Air pollution control, permitting, knowledge of multi-media environmental sampling techniques, and/or inspection experience

* PE or QEP a plus
