Job Description
Research Lab Specialist
Memphis, TN
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, located in Memphis, Tennessee, is a premier center for research & treatment of potentially fatal childhood diseases, including cancer & certain blood, genetic, & immunodeficiency disorders. The hospital's mission is to advance cures, & means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research & treatment. St. Jude is dedicated to providing unsurpassed patient care & to advancing the health of children through biomedical research.
Currently, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital has an opening for a Research Lab Specialist (Job Number 30333) in the Biochemistry Department.
The Research Lab Specialist in the Biochemistry Department assists the principal investigator with the collection & analysis of data for specified research projects. The goal of our laboratory is to determine how metabolism regulates the suppression & activation of cell death (apoptosis) & to characterize the factors involved. Specifically we use the Xenopus egg as a model system for studying the metabolic regulation of cancer cell death. The Xenopus egg extract system is an attractive model in which to study the regulation of metabolism & cell death, because an increase in key metabolic pathways is a characteristic of developing tissues, & increased expression & activity of metabolic genes provides a survival advantage for the egg, similar to that in human cancer cells. The Research Lab Specialist performs laboratory experiments with minimal supervision, develops new procedures, manages specific, but limited, laboratory functions & trains laboratory personnel. Demonstrates effort to increase knowledge of a specific area of research, participates in the presentation &/or publication of research results in departmental meetings, & journal club. Properly conducts specific projects & maintains efficient laboratory operations. Performs other duties as assigned or directed in order to meet the goals & objectives of the department & the institution.
