Job Description
Position Title Research Scientist: Accelerator Engineering Physicist
We are looking for a Physicist/Engineer interested in joining Varian's Accelerator Systems Applied Research group developing & maintaining Varian s core linear accelerator & systems technologies. The individual should have electron linac design (or related) experience, the ability and aptitude to manage technical design/development projects and work within a small team in support of Oncology Systems World Wide Engineering Organization.
The Accelerator Systems group comprises the Microwave R&D and Physics Applied Research Teams. We are actively engaged in design and development of microwave electron linacs, pulsed power tube development and RF systems for new product introduction, reliability/performance improvement and cost reduction for existing lines. An individual with a strong and practical foundation in microwave theory, as it relates to electron linac resonant structure design, linac computational modeling and the flow of work from prototype machining, brazing and cold testing through high-power tests and initial production is highly desirable. Assignments may also include support of beam physics measurements on systems, analysis of beam transport, magnetics and Monte Carlo analysis. Responsibilities and specialization will depend on experience and strengths, but we are looking toward a mid-level individual with a PhD in EE/ME/Physics.
This position will require excellent communication skills and the ability to work well as part of a team, with respect and consideration for team members. Achievements will benefit from an enthusiasm for developing others, and a passion for developing and sharing knowledge and expertise. Will guide, direct, educate and mentor other employees on basics of electron linacs and systems. Experience required in several of the following: electromagnetic CAD, microwave test and measurement, high-power microwave sources and systems, accelerator system maintenance and operation and electron beam diagnostics. Background includes familiarity with several: vector network analyzer, VSWR, power meter, oscilloscope, spectrum analyzer, waveguide networks, isolator, magnetron, klystron, modulator and Monte Carlo analysis.
Additional duties will include:
- Early-stage participation/consulting on engineering project/dev. teams.
- Design/Development efforts for components, linacs, systems or solutions in support of medical oncology and/or industrial business units.
- Complaint investigations, as required

Job Requirements
Minimum Required Skills and Knowledge:
Project management skills, including leading teams. Ability to articulately document, report, and present results of work to management level. Ability to write and present scientific manuscripts.
Proficient in utilizing business tools such as: E-mail, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Experience with SAP or equivalent ERP product and productivity software desired.

Typical Education and Experience:
Bachelors degree (or equivalent experience) and 8 years of related experience or Masters Degree with 6 years of related experience.
