A Research Technician II position is available in Dr. Rudolph E. Tanzi Laboratory, Genetics and Aging Research Unit, Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Boston to help investigate the role of synaptic genes that has recently been identified to be associated with increased risk for Alzheimers disease. The incumbent will be working independently under the supervision of Dr. Vivek Gautam, DVM, PhD, (, Instructor in Neurology. The incumbent will help in characterizing the cellular and molecular mechanism of these genes and their genetic variants in Alzheimer disease pathophysiology using cell-based assays and animal models. The project will include cellular/molecular biology, protein biochemistry, cell culture and mouse handling. The individual should be able to efficiently communicate and collaborate with lab colleagues and is expected to show a high degree of interest in the project, self-motivation and initiative.


Perform protein biochemistry experiments using Gel electrophoresis, Western blot analysis, ELISA, and Immunoprecipitation techniques.

Conduct molecular biology experiments including DNA extraction, PCR, DNA-gel electrophoresis, and site-directed mutagenesis.

Maintain cell cultures and perform transient and stable transfection.

Perform immunocytochemistry and fluorescence microscopy.

Execute protocols of routine and non-routine experiments.

Assist PI in determining the most suitable methodology.

Calculate, transcribe, analyze data, and interpret results.

Prepare lab reagents, and order common laboratory reagents and general maintenance of the laboratory.

Participate in the design of experiments.

Organize and summarize acquired data, using scientific and statistical techniques, and then presents in the format of graphs, charts, tables, illustrations and slides through PPT, EXCEL and /or WORD.

Maintain and update files, databases, records, and/or other documents.

Precisely organize and accurately maintain written records of experimental procedures including Lab notebook.

Organize and/or draft material for the preparation of papers, manuscripts, or other documents resulting from data generated in research projects for publication and/or presentation.

Prepare and present reports to PI.

Minimum Education Required: Bachelor's Degree

Field of Study/Additional Specialized Training: Neuroscience, Biology or related field

Experience: 1 year of directly related experience with cell culture and molecular biology

Working Conditions: Will work in CNY Building 114, 3rd floor lab space. Will perform routine laboratory duties in the designated lab space
