POSITION SUMMARY

Responsible for providing a safe and secure environment, for hospital employees, volunteers, patients, and customers. Assists and completes all projects as assigned by the Security Department Team Leader and/or the Director of Security and Communication Services. Any criminal record any time is unacceptable.


EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE

Must have a high school diploma or GED. Potential candidates have at least one year of law enforcement, security, correctional, or military experience. Consideration will also be given to someone who is pursuing or has completed a criminal justice or similarly associated degree. Must provide proof of a valid State of Indiana personal protection permit and display safe and accurate firearm competency. Requires a current valid Indiana driver s license with a demonstrated good driving record over the past three years

Firearms: All candidates for Security must be approved and qualified with a firearm by the La Porte Hospital Range Instructor prior to employment. During the first year of employment, officers are required to attend all handgun qualifications. After the first year of employment, officers must attend and qualify a minimum of 1 time each quarter. Any officer that fails to qualify must be removed from the schedule until that officer can qualify and be approved through the Range Instructor. Special circumstances for not attending range must be approved by the Director of Security and or the Security Team Leader. The Range Instructor and or Director of Security may offer remedial training to officers who cannot pass qualification. A performance improvement may be initiated if an officer fails to qualify, attend qualification, or practice safe handling of a firearm. Officers who cannot qualify on a regular basis, or officers who are removed from the range by the authority of the Range Instructor for unsafe practices, may be terminated.

Personal Protection Permit: All non Indiana Law Enforcement Academy personnel working as a security officer must obtain and provide proof of a valid State of Indiana personal protection firearm permit in order to work as a La Porte Hospital security officer. Current or retired police officers certified by the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy who are working as security officers, meet the gun carrying requirements as established by the State of Indiana, and therefore are not required to obtain a personal protection firearms permit.

Other: All security officers must become Healthcare Provider CPR certified or the ability to become Healthcare Provider CPR certified unless exemption is in place in compliance with Administrative Police ET-002, Basis Life Support, and CPR. Provides basis life support (CPR) in emergency situations and able to apply up to 10 pounds of pressure to a bleeding site.

Code 13, restraint training, age specific, TASER and other specified job specific training opportunities offered by the Security Department are mandatory annually.

All candidates who are not certified by the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy will be required to complete the International Association of Healthcare, Safety & Security basic training certification. Officers will be given one year from date of hire to complete and pass this program. Any officer, who cannot pass the certification, will be given a second opportunity within 30 days of the first test date to retake the test at the officer s expense. If the officer cannot pass certification for the second time, employment may be terminated.
