General Overview

Established in 2007, MGH/MGPO Center for Quality and Safety (CQS) supports the MGH and MGPOs goal of creating the highest quality, safest care environment for our staff and patients. Employing an interdisciplinary team of clinicians, data analysts, researchers, project managers and informatics professionals, CQS serves as an institutional resource for furthering the MGHs goal of leading the nation in quality and safety. The Senior Consultant provides project management and analytic support to key institution-wide quality and safety initiatives.

Major Duties

Under the general direction of the Vice President for Quality and Safety, the Senior Consultant will provide project management and analytic support to high priority quality and safety initiatives throughout the institution. The position requires strong leadership skills, strong project management and organizational skills, excellent interpersonal and facilitation skills, as well as a keen analytic skill set. Performance Improvement Consultants must facilitate/lead performance improvement teams in collaboration with multiple clinical team leaders and senior administrators and without direct supervisory responsibility over team members.

The ideal candidate will be Masters prepared, possess background in healthcare consulting, and have a working knowledge of quality and safety improvement strategies and methods. Sh/e must also have experience and competence in facilitating clinical performance improvement projects in collaboration with healthcare providers. The Senior Consultant must be able to work independently to scope a project, develop project plans, and assist with implementing solutions.

A. Project Management and Team Facilitation:

1. Provides senior level project management support to multidisciplinary and often interdepartmental teams focusing on high-priority quality and safety initiatives. Serves as the content expert on improvement methodologies and imparts knowledge of improvement process to team leaders and the team. Assists the team in identifying barriers to implementing improvement plans and developing strategy to overcome these barriers.

2. Develops the analytic and measurement strategy for all projects undertaken including development of key metrics, identification of data sources and collection of baseline data. The ability to work with quantitative data is a must.

3. Communicates regularly with team stakeholders and executive sponsors about team progress toward goal achievement, critical factors and obstacles.

4. Oversees project management and logistics such as project timelines, agenda development, production and distribution of meeting minutes and documents and preparation of reports on project status and activities to various audiences.

5. Develops project plans that are practical and of appropriate scope, and includes identification of stakeholders, assessment of resource needs, and implementation timelines.

6. Works with the VP and the other consultants in the Care Improvement Division to determine resource/staffing needs for particular project and is accountable for managing the resources and deliverables for specific projects.

B. Performance Improvement Consulting

1. Employs a variety of rigorous improvement methodologies, such as Lean/Toyota Production System, Rapid Cycle Testing, Root cause analysis, FMEA, Six Sigma, etc.

2. In consultation with the Director of Care Improvement, identifies areas of content expertise that identifies him/her as an important internal resource.

3. Deployed as staff support to high strategic priority projects as requested by Senior Leadership.

4. Trains and mentors more junior members of the Center for Quality and Safety on project management, facilitation, and analytic methods.
