GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT: Summarize the nature and level of work performed.
The practice of respiratory therapy encompasses activities in diagnostic evaluation, therapy, life sustaining techniques, and education of patients, families, nurses, therapists and MDs/NPs. The Registered Therapist requires a high level of expertise in ventilator management and sophisticated diagnostic procedures.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Indicate key areas of responsibility, major job duties, special projects and key objectives for this position. These items should be evaluated throughout the year and included in the written annual evaluation.
Adheres to on-line documentation policy and procedures regarding documentation and billing.
Appropriately documents events that can impair patient care maintains office documentation
Able to recommend, monitor efficacy, maintain and trouble shoot respiratory devices and interventions.
Technical and Clinical Expertise and Other Essential Responsibilities and Duties
Demonstrates high level knowledge and skills with the following therapeutic diagnostic therapy for all age groups, adult to geriatric: mechanical ventilation and devices, non invasive ventilation and devices CPAP/BiPAP units, artificial airways, code functions, aerosol pharmacology delivery, arterial blood gas drawing and analysis, medical gas application, bronchopulmonary hygiene, sleep disorder studies, bedside spirometry and work of breathing evaluations, metabolic studies and non-invasive monitors, bronchoscopy assist.
Demonstrates knowledge and skills in clinical assessment for all age groups, adult to geriatric: breathing patterns, ABG interpretation, CXR, pulmonary waveforms, and other invasive and non-invasive monitoring.
Conducts respiratory services according to policy and procedures as outlined by the department.
Performs advanced respiratory care assignments, monitors bronchoscopy procedures
Attends and participates as directed in activities of collaborative clinical committees such as ITC, family team meetings, admission meetings and morning briefs. Assures the staff attend and are prepared as directed
Assists in development and implementation of protocols, clinical pathways, policies and procedures.
Provides in-service education to members of the respiratory, nursing and LMPs.
Assists the director in development of quality improvement indicators, collecting data, analyzing results and implementing corrective action
Completes competencies and maintains staff records. Monitors staff clinical performance and assists the director in corrective action.
Coordinates the new orientation of new staff and students.
Identifies opportunities for clinical improvement within the department, works with the director and staff to implement change.
Manages the POC lab, including all aspects of proficiency, QC, staff competency, meetings with the medical director, follow up of discrepancies, reviewing all QC performed by the staff, works with POC specialist to ensure quality testing, proficiencies and correlations are performed.
Attends all inspections related to POC testing, i.e. Joint Commission.
Performs patient rounding as directed.
Is responsible for staff scheduling and daily assignment
Performs other duties as assigned or as necessary
Oversee coordination of discharge education and planning, assures deadlines are met
Interpersonal Skills and Communication
Gives a meaningful report on patients clinical condition including plan of care.
Interacts effectively with patients, families, respiratory staff, physicians, nurses and other health providers.
Serves as a resource on Respiratory Therapy issues
Serves as member of Rehabilitation team by promoting the patients ability to function independently with pulmonary disorders.
Productivity and Professionalism
Able to prioritize work and deal with multiple simultaneous demands.
Insures appropriate information, supplies and paperwork available for next shift.
Follows infection control policy and procedures.
Follows fire and electrical safety and disaster plans.
Reports for assigned shift punctually and with minimal unplanned absences.
Maintains license and attends continuing education offerings.

Current MA Respiratory Care License
Basic and Advanced respiratory skills

Possess expertise in pulmonary rehab.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Describe the conditions in which the work is performed.
All areas of the hospital, including the ventilator program.
Eight or twelve hour shifts, including days, evenings, and nights, weekdays, weekends and holidays
Works in a patient care environment where there is potential exposure to:
1) blood, blood products and body fluids,
2) chemical hazards
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: List the number of FTEs supervised.
Responsible for the day to day operation of the Respiratory Care department. Manages the staff schedule, provides guidance and clinical supervision. Acts as a liaison to other departments.
FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY: Indicate financial scope information, i.e.: size of budget, volume, revenue, etc.
Assists the director in developing and adhering to the department budget.
