JOB DESCRIPTIONGENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
The Speech & Voice Pathologist will provide support to the Division of Otolaryngology within the Department of Surgery. This individual will assist the Director of Voice Pathology Services in the Division by performing evaluation and treatment services for patients referred for laryngeal/phonatory disorders. Services are provided on an outpatient basis. In addition, they will gain a background in physician office and hospital operations as well as the field of Otolaryngology. This position requires a highly motivated individual with a follow-through approach and strong detail oriented skills.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Evaluates patients referred to the Voice Pathology Services. The nature of the evaluation is determined by the etiology and extent of the phonatory disorder. Evaluative protocol may include:
a. Obtaining a detailed case history.
b. Obtaining objective measures and psychoacoustic judgments of phonatory ability
c. Administering and interpreting acoustic analysis for documentation of vocal parameters.
d. Administering videolaryngostroboscopic examinations in conjunction with the otolaryngologist. Assisting the otolaryngologist in the interpretation of stroboscopic images.
2. Interprets evaluation results for patients, their families and medical staff and makes appropriate recommendations for management and treatment.
3. Develops appropriate goals for each patient and designs a therapeutic program to meet these goals.
4. Provides therapy in accordance with diagnosis, evaluative results and agreed upon goals.
5. Compiles and maintains documentation of patient contact according to JCAHO procedures and standards.
6. Interacts on the patient's behalf with physicians, hospital personnel, employers, etc.
7. When appropriate, makes referrals for medical evaluation, audiology services or follow up by other professions.
8. Initiate and monitor orders for inventory when inventory is low.
9. Completes other assignments as requested by the physicians and/or Division Administrator.
1. Master's Degree in Communication Disorders
2. Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) from the American Speech Language and Hearing Association. Appropriately trained candidates may be considered for a Clinical Fellowship Year in anticipation of being awarded the CCCs. In this case, supervision and clinical oversight is provided in accordance with guidelines established by from the American Speech Language and Hearing Association.
3. Licensure in Speech-Language Pathology from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, following completion of the CFY.
4. Demonstrates extensive experience in diagnosis and remediation of laryngeal/phonatory disorders.
5. Interpersonal skills necessary to work effectively with a wide variety of individuals.
1. Must have the ability to work independently and simultaneously use good judgment.
2. Must be a "team player" and enjoy working with people, both on the telephone and in person, ability to deal with difficult people.
3. Excellent communication (oral and written), leadership, interpersonal and organizational skills absolutely necessary.
4. Medical terminology knowledge is preferred.
5. Excellent typing skills.
6. Knowledge of third-party billing and all current insurance industry.
7. Knowledge of the patient access processes (i.e. admitting, pre-op, registration)
This is a very fast paced ambulatory clinic within a large teaching hospital.
There is no supervisory responsibility at this time.
