#82316 RESEARCH ASSOCIATE II

DESCRIPTION

Independently perform and interpret experiments to test mechanisms of genetic regulation of organ formation in zebrafish, including examination of the development of the heart, kidneys, and vessels. Tasks include: maintaining strains of mutant and transgenic zebrafish, manipulation of zebrafish gene function through genome editing, and analysis of embryonic phenotypes through in situ hybridization and immunofluorescence.

Responsible for laboratory management including: ordering and organization of supplies, maintenance of lab and computer equipment, training of undergraduate students, routine preparation of buffers and media, and laboratory safety. Participate in the publication of scientific manuscripts based on experiments performed.

* Able to be flexible with work hours to include occasional evening or weekend work as required for animal care and experiments.

QUALIFICATIONS

*

A minimum of 2 years of research experience with zebrafish aquaculture, genetics, and/or developmental biology.
*

Practical competency in standard recombinant DNA techniques and preparation of standard media and buffers.
*

Knowledge and experience to conduct experimental procedures independently such as fluorescent reporter expression, standard in situ hybridization, fluorescent in situ hybridization, epistasis, genome editing, generating transgenic lines and immunofluorescence.
*

Strong theoretical knowledge of aquaculture/fisheries, genetics, and/or developmental biology; BA or BS in either Biology or aquaculture/fisheries; and/or equivalent combination of experience and education.
*

Knowledge and experience to purchase lab supplies and equipment, with the ability to proactively and appropriately facilitate the maintenance of all lab supplies and equipment.
*

Experience and knowledge with word processing, database, spreadsheet, and graphics software with a willingness and ability to update and increase skills and knowledge as needed.
*

Demonstrated ability to keep accurate records of experimental procedures and results, to discuss them, and to prepare relevant oral and written presentations.
*

Appropriate dexterity for manipulating zebra fish embryos.
*

Knowledge/understanding and at least some experience with Safety Data Sheets, hazard communication and Injury and Illness Prevention Program.
*

Familiarity with a Chemical Hygiene Plan addressing safety precautions including appropriate clothing and shoes, safe handling of chemicals, use of protective items.
*

Willingness and ability to keep safety training current and consistent with research involvement.
*

Appropriate physical strength for handling aquaculture equipment.
*

Knowledge of UCSD and Division policies and procedures related to purchasing preferred.
