The GPI-Kalamazoo MI 100% Recycled Clay-coated Paperboard Mill is looking for a new safety manager. We are looking for someone who has a passion for safety, who is a self-starter, who takes initiative, and who can communicate with all employees. You will be part of the team that drives for a safe work place, for continuous improvement, and for success. The GPI-Kalamazoo Mill, with 2 paper machines, is the largest producer of Clay-coated Recycled Boxboard in the US. The mills product is used primarily to package dry foods such as cereal. Adjacent to the mill is a large GPI printing plant. MISSION / SUMMARY: The Safety Manager, will provide world class expertise to fully support the Kalamazoo Mill's safety objectives through demonstrated leadership. This position is a member of the Mill senior leadership team directly responsible for managing the safety systems ensuring the health and welfare of all employees, vendors, contractors, visitors, etc., JOB FUNCTION: Job functions include, but are not limited to the following. Accountable for setting direction and deploying safety, health resources in a union environment within GPII Develops plans and delivers results in a fast changing business and regulatory environment by participating in Mill Divisional safety initiatives that drive safety process improvements. Provides input to Mill and departmental strategy Coordinate and drive the Mill Safety Committee reviews. Participate, provide guidance and support for area safety team meetings Manages the safety direction for all persons on company premise Contributes directly to Mill priorities and planning Coordinates the daily activities of safety, health in support of the operations team Establishes methodologies for measuring the effectiveness of mill compliance with OSHA, state and other federal laws Provides solutions to complex safety, health and security issues serving as the senior safety leader i.e. best practice/quality safety and health resource, technical expert, train/mentors managers, supervisors and staff Conducts studies and investigations to ensure compliance with government safety and health laws, standards and regulations, and industrial hygiene. Established a rapport with local fire, police, and sheriff departments Investigates accidents and promotes safety-conscious work performance and training programs with defined safety performance measures including A3 and other data mining processes for hazard analysis and corrective actions on Mill incidents driving for root cause analysis Designs, develops, implements and oversees the organization's health, safety and security programs and procedures including First Responders, OSHA Audiometric and Respirator fit testing, etc. Safeguards employees and surrounding community by ensuring all site facilities are in compliance with regulations. Works closely with OSHA officials, state police, Hazmat, community representatives, and other officials as required Review/Approve all applicable capital investment requests Personal involvement with mill personnel to encourage safe behaviors and to audit, identify and correct safety violations and deficiencies Manages the safety audits of buildings, facilities, tools and equipment Determines safety training requirements and provides employees with safety training applicable to their work processes. Establishes training schedule for Focus and/or other behavioral based training and tracking improvement actions. * Develops recommendations and follow-up to prevent accident recurrence * Maintains comprehensive knowledge of government safety regulations BACKGROUND / EXPERIENCE: 5-10+ years of progressive Safety & Health leadership experience in heavy manufacturing, to include Process Safety Management and medical. Possesses broad technical expertise, business and industry knowledge, and process and people leadership capabilities. Paper manufacturing experience preferred. Union environment experience preferred. EDUCATION / KNOWLEDGE: BS Degree required; graduate degree desirable.
