Job Summary Statement:
Under the direction of the school Principal and following the guidelines set up by the State of California School Nurses' Board, the school nurse will initiate and oversee the health maintenance and disease prevention in children and families in an elementary school setting, assist teachers in health education, collaborate in planning and promoting the health-screening events, promote self-health care, disease prevention and family education, collaborate with teachers, principal and school personnel, and collaborate with UCLA Researchers with an interest in health-related issues. The school nurse is uniquely qualified in preventative health, health assessment, and referral procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR POSITION
Registered Nurse with BS in Nursing and a current credential in school nursing.
RN license kept current by the completion of every two years with 30 hours of continuing education provided by state recognized providers
Demonstrated working knowledge and experience in family health teaching, psychological interventions and interdisciplinary approach
Ability to plan and promote health screening events
Ability and experience in teaching and promoting self-health care, student and family education, and disease prevention.
Demonstrated knowledge and ability to conduct audiometry and vision screening tests and understand results. Ability to teach this skill to nursing students
Ability to provide problem-solving strategies
Ability to maintain flexibility and professionalism in unexpected circumstances
Ability to create and teach health education lessons on various health topics
Demonstrated skill in maintaining active communication between students, teachers and families
Knowledge and understanding of the developmental levels of children and ability to discuss these with parents and teachers
Knowledge of community resources for health counseling for staff and families and ability to help with such counseling
Utilize Magnus Health online application to streamline the collection and secure storage of student health information.
Ability to promote research activities as a means of advancing student health and school health services
Maintain the protection of, and confidentiality with, student health records according to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Family Education Rights Protection Act (FERPA), other applicable federal laws, state laws and regulations, and professional standards of practice to safeguard privacy.
Ability to integrate "caring, kindness, and respect into nursing practice" (ANA & NASN, 2011, p. 51).
Ability to deliver care in an inclusive, collaborative manner that embraces diversity in the school community.
