JOB DUTIES:

Working under the direction of the Director, Research and Education communications, the senior specialist designs and executes initiatives that increase the awareness and reputation of the DGSOM internally and externally. The senior specialist writes content; develops communication plans; advises faculty and other administrators on internal communications including faculty recognition and announcements; provides advise on Web, mobile and other content creation. Supports education communications needs in the new David Geffen School of Medicine -- Geffen Hall, such as internal messaging, electronic bulletin boards and other communication needs within the school. Plans new ways to reach medical students as technology evolves (examples: Google Hangouts, Youtube, blogs, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and other social media commonly used by medical students). Aligns with campus and Health System marketing and IT on mobile app support directed at students, potential students, researchers and faculty. The senior specialist implements new programs and initiatives such as a Basic Science day; quarterly Research Town Hall meetings; research-oriented weekly newsletter; and other communication to support the Dean of the School of Medicine. Supports communications initiatives for the 6 research themes; Accelerator; technology transfer/intellectual property; Precision Medicine and clinical trials. Executes initiatives to tell the DGSOM basic science story in innovative and compelling ways, both internally and externally. Supports communication of special projects such as the launch of Geffen Hall and the upcoming seismic retrofit of the rest of CHS. Organizes an ongoing communication program for Geffen Hall, such as electronic bulletin boards and other social media tools that serve to unite medical students as part of a larger DGSOM team. Effectively write/oversee content for website, blogs, social media, Instagram, Twitter and other communications. Translates/writes academic stories for consumer, internal and other audiences.Use new, innovative tools and opportunities for shaping and conveying a consistent message across DGSOM. Align closely with communication teams including the Jonsson Cancer Center; Broad Stem Cell Research Center at UCLA; Media Relations; government relations; Development; internal communications/Intranet; Web; senior strategy officer/Basic Science.



JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum of 5 years experience in communication, writing/editing, developing communication plans and programs. Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree preferred in a field related to science, research, education, and communications. Background in academic medicine, research, education, biotech or other scientific organization preferred. Experience in a busy communications office with pressing deadlines required. Demonstrated success in managing communication projects and budgets. Demonstrates creativity and new ways of reaching target audiences. Experience in understanding/translating/editing/writing research and education content. Demonstrated experience in developing and executing communication plans and initiatives. Able to develop and maintain effective working relationships with scientists/faculty,co-workers and other campus colleagues as well as donors and alumni. Solid project management skills, ability to set priorities and keep projects on track. Strong editorial skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to present effectively. Thorough knowledge of and experience in social media platform and tools. Able to translate complex scientific material to multiple audiences in a simple and clear way. Excellent interpersonal skills to maximize functional interaction with a wide variety of individuals and groups including staff, faculty, physicians, researchers, and administrators.
