Working under the direction of the Chief Communications and Marketing Officer, the senior specialist designs and executes communications initiatives to increase the awareness and reputation of UCLA Health/DGSOM robust research portfolio internally and externally. The senior specialist writes content for Web sits, social media and other communication platforms; develops communication plans; advises faculty, administrators and others on communications including faculty recognition and announcements as well as provides advise on appropriate communications channels to reach specific audiences via Web, mobile and social media.
The senior communications specialist implements new programs and initiatives such as a Basic Science day; quarterly Research Town Hall meetings; research-oriented weekly newsletter; and other communication to support the Dean of the School of Medicine. Effectively write/oversee content for website, blogs, social media, Instagram, Twitter and other communications. Supports communications initiatives for the 6 research themes; Accelerator; technology transfer/intellectual property; Precision Medicine and clinical trials. Executes initiatives to tell the DGSOM basic science story in innovative and compelling ways, both internally and externally. Uses video, graphics and info graphics to creatively communication science and research. Translates/writes academic stories for consumer, internal and other audiences. Use new, innovative tools and opportunities for shaping and conveying a consistent message across DGSOM. Align closely with communication teams including the Jonsson Cancer Center; Broad Stem Cell Research Center at UCLA; Media Relations; government relations; Development; internal communications/Intranet; Web; senior strategy officer/Basic Science.
Bachelor's degree /Master's degree are strongly preferred in a field related to science, research, education, and communications. (Strongly Preferred). Minimum of 7 years experience in communication, writing/editing, Web content development, social media, developing communication plans and programs. Demonstrates creativity and new ways of reaching target audiences. Background in academic medicine, research, education, biotech or other scientific organization preferred. Experience in a busy communications office with pressing deadlines. Demonstrated success in managing communication projects and budgets. Experience in understanding/translating/editing/writing research and education content. Demonstrated experience in developing and executing communication plans and initiatives. Able to translate complex scientific material to multiple audiences in a simple and clear way. Excellent writing abilities; skilled word usage, spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Demonstrated strong understanding and experience with social media tools and Web sites in a corporate setting and strategies which have delivered proven results. Must remain abreast and knowledgeable of new and emerging technologies, trends and applications. Demonstrated strong project management experience including ability to independently prioritize and track complex, competing schedules. Proactively anticipate and complete tasks whether working independently or as part of a team Superior interpersonal skills to facilitate constructive, respectful communications and understanding among staff, clients and vendors. Ability to anticipate, prevent and solve problems in a positive manner. Ability to self-initiate programs and work methods to facilitate department production workflow. Generate new approaches and solutions as appropriate.
