JOB DESCRIPTIONDevelopment Chemist (O5) - PhD
Essential job functions:
The employee will work in a project-focused environment as a member of an active, multidisciplinary group responsible for manufacturing process development of new products and optimization of established manufacturing procedures. Responsibilities include designing and performing laboratory experiments, evaluating data, and communicating project results in order to meet the ultimate goal of creating a reliable manufacturing procedure. The employee will also be expected to aid in scale-up of his or her newly developed process to manufacturing scale, which may include writing manufacturing instruction, training operators, and troubleshooting process problems. Process development will be focused on the following: fermentation / cell culture, extraction of proteins from plant, animal, or bacterial sources, and protein purification.
This position requires a PhD in biochemistry, microbiology or a related discipline. A broad understanding of molecular biology and biochemistry lab techniques is essential, and includes the following: Protein purification and characterization, chromatography (IEX, HIC, SEC, etc.), enzymatic assay, recombinant protein expression, and microbial cell culture. Preference will be given to individuals that have experience with yeast, CHO, or other non-E. coli cell culture. Experience with automated chromatography systems (such as GE AKTA or Millipore K-Prime) and bioreactors / fermenters (such as Sartorius BIOSTAT), as well as knowledge of cell culture optimization techniques are highly desirable. Interpersonal, communication, organizational and computer skills are required.
