Position Summary:

Berkeley Labs Materials Sciences Division has an opening for a Soft X-Ray Staff Scientist. You will maintain the x-ray microscopy facility supporting external users, and sustaining a self-sufficient research program. The research component will include the planning and performing of the experimental studies, the analysis and theoretical description of the experimental data and the publication and presentation of the obtained results in peer-reviewed journals and at venues to the worldwide community.

What You Will Do:


Direct the operate, optimize, and maintenance of the zoneplate-based soft-x-ray microscopy beamline and instrument at a synchrotron light source.

Maintain a high profile scientific research program, preferably in magnetic materials, leveraging the capabilities of a soft-x-ray microscope and including theory, modeling, and data-analysis components.

Manage an external general user program with high scientific productivity.

Develop international collaborations in the field of soft-x-ray microscopy and applications.

Develop and maintain external funding sources sufficient to support a vibrant scientific program including key instrumentation.

Maintain a strong publication and presentation record.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:


Maintain research website

Develop scientific sample preparation methods

What Is Required:


Ph.D. in physics, material science, or a related field, or equivalent total work experience, plus 5 year experience or more.

Deep knowledge of zoneplate-based soft X-ray microscopy, preferably magnetic microscopy both in static and time- resolved modes.

Demonstrated theoretical and modeling skills relevant to the experimental program, preferably micromagnetic modeling of spin configuration and spin dynamics in thin films, nanowires and patterned elements.

Demonstrated expertise in zoneplate-based soft X-ray microscopy.

Image processing and statistical analysis of large datasets.

Demonstrated record of collaborative efforts including international groups.

Demonstrated successful track record in the generation of external funding sources.

Strong publication record including in high profile journals.

Additional Desired Qualifications:


Experience in operation of vacuum systems.

Experience in operating experimental programs at synchrotrons.

Experience in tomography.

Experience in x-ray sample preparation.

Experience in scientific user support.

Experience in interfacing with engineering and technical support staff.
