JOB DESCRIPTION

Software Architect (athenahealth, Inc.; Watertown, Massachusetts): Opportunities available for software architects. Experienced software professional to lead the design / architecture for a new platform 2.0 and provide technical guidance to the platform team to enable timely delivery of the platform in a scrum environment. Must have a proven track record of relevant leadership experience and the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, in a fast-paced team environment consisting of IT professionals. Duties: drive the strategic vision of the technology within the platform, and align the technological and architectural visions to ensure future stability, security, and scalability of our product offerings; lead and advise a team of developers, providing mentorship and guidance on technical skills, while ensuring proper alignment of teams and strategic goals; act as a subject matter expert within the specific technologies (e.g., Java / Python; javascript / jQuery; HADR Cloud-based systems; and LAMP, ELK, MEAN technology stacks); monitor system performance and external development trends that can be adopted and applied to current technology; identify and initiate projects and tasks that continually improve platform capabilities; lead by example and through code reviews to ensure code quality throughout the system; lead discussions and make specific technical recommendations for platform improvements; serve as the primary source of communication on current state of the platform’s technology stack; work with application team stakeholders to ensure the platform operates efficiently and satisfactorily; function as both a manager and individual contributor to develop extensions to the system architecture; and work through design questions in close cooperation with business stakeholders.

Minimum requirements are: Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent degree) in Computer Engineering or relevant engineering discipline, plus 6 years of experience, either in the position offered or in relevant software role(s) as developer, engineer, architect, manager.

Must have: proven ability to assemble a team-focused software platform based on expertise working with emerging technologies such as open source software, the Cloud, and data analytics; proven ability to evangelize and leverage new platform technology to a diverse internal user audience comprised of hundreds of domestic and offshore software developers; proven ability to drive and direct teams of software developers in a scrum / Cloud environment to build self-sufficient software products, delivered with increased efficiency; proven skills in oral and written communication suitable for a fast-paced team environment of IT professionals; 10% domestic travel required.
