Job Description
The position's primary focus is to ensure compliance with Customs laws and regulations in accordance with Varian s corporate trade compliance program.
Be our internal expert for Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) classification; research technical characteristics of goods; determine HTS code and maintain HS codes in SAP GTS across multiple tariffs; maintain HTS classification files and audit trail.
Knowledgeable about and ability to qualify goods for Free Trade Agreements (FTA).
Understanding and application of Customs Valuation Code.
Familiarity with Customs ACE system
Serve as the primary liaison to U.S. Customs and other Government agencies concerning pending imports.
Respond to U.S. Customs and other Government requests e.g. CF28, CF29, Census, etc. in a timely manner.
Provide broker support for HTS classification, country of origin, value and other data elements as required to ensure compliant Customs entries.
Consult with global business units and locations in integration of compliance program requirements into business process.
Work proactively with global business teams to maintain quality and availability of trade data elements and minimize disruption and delay in import process.
Provide training on Customs compliance requirements.
Position may require support to global operations outside standard U.S. business working hours.
Travel may be required (approximately 10%).

Job Requirements
Your expertise will include:

Bachelors of Arts or Bachelors of Science required.
Licensed U.S. Customs Broker is required.
5 plus years of experience with Customs and import processes in a medical device or high tech manufacturing environment, concentrating on HTS classification.
Extensive knowledge of U.S. Customs Regulations, including the HTS, CFR 19, Explanatory Notes and Customs publications.
Demonstrated ability to classify goods across the USHTS according to Customs requirements with a high level of speed and accuracy.
Familiarity with FDA requirements for importation of medical devices.
Ability to translate complex Customs requirements to best practices for business, manufacturing and supply chain operations.
Ability to work on multiple concurrent tasks and projects and to re-prioritize activities on a continuous basis.
Able to work remotely from management and other team members with minimal supervision and high level of productivity.
Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to work well with multiple internal customers, brokers, and external suppliers.
Knowledge and experience with U.S. export control laws and regulations is a plus.
Excellent computer skills; previous experience with SAP and GTS is desirable.
Language skills are a plus.
