Job Description
The DOE Joint Genome Institute in Walnut Creek, CA (a division ofthe Lawrence Berkeley National Lab) has a 1 year term appointment available foran experienced Research Associate. Under general supervision,will serve as part of a research team responsible for transcriptome basedanalysis activities at the JGI. Specifictasks include; standard library production, RNA sample QualityControl (QC), cDNA construction and QC and submission to sequencing. Will be responsible for understanding andapplying the latest sequencing and library protocols surrounding nextgeneration SBS chemistry and analysis, supporting new Research and Development(R&D) initiatives and investigating and determining how new library methodscan be integrated into the JGI sequencing platforms. Will also interpretRolling Quality Control (RQC) reports, analyze sequencing data, troubleshootprocess failures and collaborate/interact with various levels of JGI staff andexternal collaborators. Position reportsto the Head of the Sequencing Technology group.
Specific Job Duties
Essential
- Perform workassignments related to RNA based library production including; standardlibraries. RNA sample QC, cDNA construction, QC and submission to sequencing.
- Interpret RQC reports to understand libraryquality and identify library failures.
- Troubleshoot process issues and provide input forimprovements.
- Prepare standard updates, progress reports andpresentations on project status.
- Identify new R&D initiatives and plans aswell as design testing experiments, propose implementation plans, timelines andmilestones.
- Understand and apply next generation SBSchemistry, performance and library protocols.
- Investigate and determine how new librarymethods can be integrated into the JGI sequencing platforms.
- Write Standard operating procedures (SOPs) andprotocols for new methods and cross-train team members on new procedures.
- Participate in testing and evaluating newautomation, software, and biological protocols that are being introduced intothe RNA based analysis process.
- Involve in the upcoming ITS trainingand evaluation process.
- Prepare budgeting and cost evaluationfor various library types and perform process optimization to improve libraryquality and minimize cost.

- Contribute to data, text, and conclusions ingroup publications.
- Maintain an accurate and detailed notebook ofobservations in the laboratory
- Research articles and journal reports to studyand survey new techniques and instruments.Key Success Factors Essential
- B.S degree in Biology or Engineering or related discipline preferred and two to five years of experience in a Biology, Microbiology, Genetics or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrated experience working in a researchlaboratory performing DNA re-sequencing.
- Strong working knowledge of Cloning and PCRtechnology, library construction and sequencing.
- Computer and database proficiency (Oracle andExcel data entry on PC) as well as basic UNIX navigation skills.
- Basic UNIX navigation skills and the ability to follow, update and redesign written laboratoryprotocols.
- Excellent and effective interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills; ability to interact collaboratively with staff at all levels of the organization.
- Must demonstrate efficient time management skills and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated ability to work autonomously as well as part of a diverse team environment.
- Good analytical skills to effectively evaluate data and make recommendations.Preferred
- Master's Degree in Biology, Engineering or related discipline

This is a 1 year term appointment with the possibility of renewal and with thepossibility of conversion to career based upon satisfactory job performance,continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs. Work will beperformed at the DOE Joint Genome Institute (JGI) in Walnut Creek, CA. Job mayrequire occasional travel, weekend, and after-hours work.
