JOB DESCRIPTIONThis position is assigned to the ELVIS2 contract supporting the NASA Launch Service Program. The Flight Design Engineer will be assigned to support the Mission Analysis department providing insight/oversight and analyzing launch vehicle trajectories, performance, and mission design, exercising approval authority on all applicable launch vehicle contractor deliverables for our NASA customer at the Kennedy Space Center. Insight/oversight includes independent verification and validation (IV&V) of analyses, support of launch operations, and mission integration requirements verification. The candidate will provide products/services that always meet and usually exceed customer expectations, delivering exceptional experiences that create value every time.
Essential Roles & Responsibilities:
Support the Flight Dynamics Branch of the NASA Launch Services Program to serve as a technical expert for trajectory/performance issues on NASA ELV missions
Analyze spacecraft mission objectives to develop trajectory design requirements
Perform simulation modeling for trajectory designs to optimize mission objectives
Review and validate launch service contractors (LSC) trajectory analyses
Perform mission analyses such as launch window determination, shadow studies, station coverage and mobile coverage studies, relative motion studies, or other mission-specific analyses to support conclusions and recommendations
Provide estimates of vehicle performance to support advanced mission studies
Provide on-console support during the launch campaign
Conduct detailed reviews of analyses or flight data to support NASA launch vehicle certification of ELV
Perform reviews of LSC documents and analyses (e.g. trajectory analyses, separation studies, mass properties reports, interface control documents etc.) to make technical assessments of relevant issues that arise during the integration process, and present at engineering reviews as required.
Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Physics, or a related technical field
15+ years of experience in trajectory analysis/design (aerospace/launch vehicle experience)
Experience in the use of industry modeling/simulation and computing tools (OTIS, POST, FreeFlyer, MATLAB)
Good oral, written communication as well as analytical and problem solving skills
Effective technical writing and research abilities
Ability to establish solid working relationships with peers and management
Candidate must be willing to travel occasionally ( 10%)
M.S. or PhD degree in Aerospace Engineering or a related technical field
10 or more years of experience in launch vehicle analysis/design
