STAFF CHEMIST – HOMEMADE EXPLOSIVES CHEMIST, CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CAD-2012-12)

Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA) is seeking a Staff Chemist -Homemade Explosives Chemist. Under general direction, the Chemist shall be responsible for conducting complex chemical studies on homemade explosive formulations and syntheses, analyses, and tests which require technical knowledge and techniques in projects regarding organization research, production or operation. He or she will utilize independent judgment within broad parameters to determine an appropriate approach. Perform research and analysis on various substances (organic or inorganic) to determine chemical properties, composition, structure, etc., and to investigate potential applications to medicine or industry. Conduct experiments, develop solutions to technical problems, and prepare reports to management. He or she may develop technical papers and or presentations for scientific groups, publications, or meetings. The candidate will broadly apply basic principles, theories, and concepts to job assignments. The successful applicant will have a seasoned level of full competence that all professionals are expected to achieve in the area. The Chemist will solve a diverse range of complex problems, working with limited direction. He or she will frequently interface with internal/external customers and makes significant contributions to department goals and planning efforts.

Applicants selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.

This position is in support of a Department of Defense Agency and applicants selected for this position must have an Active Department of Defense TS with eligibility for SCI clearance.

Required Skills

- Ph. D in chemistry, chemical engineering, physics or related physical science
- Must understand synthesis, formulation, and detection of homemade explosives
- Excellent writing and oral presentation skills

Experience Required

- Experience working with homemade explosives, including:
+ Synthesizing molecular HME compounds, as well as preparing HME related formulations including oxidizer/fuel explosives
+ Processes and procedures for the synthesis and construction of HMEs and related HME devices
+ HME and precursor signatures
+ Technologies for detection, mitigation and defeat of HME devices
- Experience with characterization of explosives and HME related mixtures, including spectroscopic characterization, thermal stability, and sensitivity
- 3 years of related experience working with homemade explosives

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

- Direct synthetic and detonation experience of homemade explosives
- Detection of homemade explosives using various analytical methodologies
