Reporting to the Director, Pharmacy Services UCLA Department of Medicine. Staff Pharmacist performs a range of functions that include the following: oversees preparation and dispensing of conventional chemotherapy, support medications, immune modulators and investigational drugs. In collaboration with pharmacy research staff performs required record keeping, drug ordering, and drug inventory activities for research conducted at the UCLA Santa Monica Oncology practice. Conducts formulary review, development of programs and support materials, financial reconciliation, drug ordering, and general oversight of MD Dispensing. Serves as a clinical resource to other health professionals. Ensures maintenance of and adherence to established policies governing the safe, consistent and accurate dosing and administration of medication. Evaluates clinically significant drug-drug and drug-disease interactions. Demonstrates proficiency in side effect, symptom and pain management. In compliance with established policies conducts prescription renewal through interface with prescribers and evaluation of lab and compliance data. Performs tasks associated with population health initiative including ordering of medications and requisite lab tests. Maintenance of accurate and appropriate documentation governing prescriber activities in EPIC/Beacon or other EMR. Strong patient education component. Conducts quality control inspections and chart reviews necessary for ambulatory clinic certification. Participates in budgeting, contracting, ordering, and return of pharmaceuticals. Other tasks or projects assigned per manager discretion. Is an effective, collegial, positive member of a multi-disciplinary health care team.


Current California license to practice pharmacy. PharmD degree. Ability to set priorities which accurately reflect the relative importance of job responsibilities. Skill to work independently and follow-through on assignments with minimal supervision. Knowledge and ability to understand and interpret current scientific literature. Skill to effectively communicate orally using appropriate vocabulary and grammar to obtain information, explain policies and procedures, and to persuade others to adopt a specific opinion or action. Knowledge of and ability to perform age specific and disease specific pharmacokinetic calculations. Knowledge to compound intravenous admixtures and other sterile products such as intrathecal injections according to acceptable stands of aseptic technique. Skill in writing articles/monographs/emails which are concise, coherent, and use appropriate vocabulary and grammar. Proficiency in all aspects of electronic medical record operation, particularly in the interpretation of laboratory and clinical data and physician recommendations necessary to authorize prescription refills . Ability to organize, prioritize, and follow through for multiple patient treatments on an ongoing basis. Ability to provide evidence-based recommendations for symptom management. Ability to accept direction from leadership and act promptly.

Demonstrated ability to establish, nurture, and maintain cooperative working relationships with peers, co-workers, health care practitioners, and administrators. Skill in listening perceptively, conveying awareness and responding to patients and visitors with health concerns using tact and discretion. Ability to interact diplomatically and sympathetically with patients, their families, and general public in a high volume, clinical setting. Skill in performing with frequent interruptions and/or distractions including the ability to accept equivocal circumstances and respond to changing priorities and deadlines. Ability to maintain confidentiality and to work with sensitive and confidential information using discretion, professionalism, and good judgment. Proficient in Care Connect/BEACON order entry system.
