Department Description

Sterile Processing provides decontamination, assembly and sterilization of surgical instrumentation and equipment for the operating rooms, patient care areas, diagnostic, treatment and research specialties including non-clinical areas such as campus research, school of nursing and health sciences.

The Sterile Processing department has three primary locations. The hub of the department is located in Moffitt/Long Hospital and is staffed twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. A satellite area is maintained in the Ambulatory Surgery Center and staffed Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM - 9:30 PM. At our Mount Zion Medical Center, staffed from 6:30 AM to 11:30 PM. The units of service for the Sterile Processing areas are based on a combination of Inpatient and Outpatient procedures and surgical cases.

Job Summary

The Perioperative Sterile Processing Department Manager directs, plans, and manages the operations and resources of the Sterile Processing Department. This includes all clinical and business operations as well as financial and human resources. This position will work closely with Pod managers in the O.R. in the development of service specific teams to increase operational efficiency and staff morale. The manager promotes the development of a motivated and cohesive team and supports educational strategies to enhance staff knowledge with respect to processing practices and service delivery.

The Manager will oversee sterile processing functions at Parnassus (ML & ASC), Mount Zion & Mission Bay and align operations with the Vision and Mission, Organizations current goals and workplan initiatives. Develops Performance Improvement goals and facilitates staff, physician, and pod participation in projects. Teamwork, scheduling practices, educational needs, recognition, patient safety, operational efficiencies, and communication will be assessed and developed.

Active involvement with the O.R. Manager, Pod Managers, Surgeons, Anesthesiologists, Schedulers, and SPD Leadership to improve OR efficiencies and teamwork.

Develop systems to ensure instrumentation is available for surgeries and that instruments are returned to SPD in optimal condition. Monitor services provided and collaborate in developing methods to improve utilization and efficiency.

The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations is required.

Work Environment

* Posts flyers and posters in designated areas only; does not post on walls, doors or windows.

* Knows where the Environment of Care Manual is kept in department; corrects or reports unsafe conditions to the appropriate departments.

* Protects the physical environment and equipment from damage and theft.

Required Qualifications

* Bachelor s degree in Nursing, Business, or Allied Health Care or an equivalent combination of education and experience required

* Certified in Sterile Processing through a nationally recognized sterile processing certification body

* Minimum of five years practical experience in sterile processing activities

* Three to five years supervisory experience

* Able to prioritize effectively according to department needs and ability to organize a large number of changing variables.

* Strong communication, writing and inter-personal abilities, including skills such as attitude, diplomacy and persuasiveness, analytical ability, strong judgment and managerial skills

* The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations is required

Preferred Qualifications

* Prefer RN with surgical and sterile processing experience

* Three to five years of experience with procurement, supply chain management, financial & budget management

* Three years progressive experience with Windows based applications, Word, Excel, Instrument Tracking System, and Surgery Scheduling system

* Experience with process improvement methods or quality initiatives


* Certified in Sterile Processing through a nationally recognized sterile processing certification body
