Department Description

Sterile Processing provides decontamination, assembly and sterilization of surgical instrumentation and equipment for the operating rooms, patient care areas, diagnostic, treatment and research specialties including non-clinical areas such as campus research, school of nursing and health sciences.

The Sterile Processing department has three primary locations. The hub of the department is located in Moffitt/Long Hospital and is staffed twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

A satellite area is maintained in the Ambulatory Surgery Center and staffed Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM - 9:30 PM. And at our Mount Zion Medical Center, staffed from 6:30 AM to 11:30 PM. The units of service for the Sterile Processing areas are based on a combination of Inpatient and Outpatient procedures and surgical cases.

Job Summary

Incumbent decontaminates, operationally checks, assembles, sterilizes, and distributes surgical instrumentation, implants, supplies, and equipment throughout the Medical Center. Incumbent maintains documentation related to these duties and assists in the training of other Sterile Processing Technicians. Incumbent pulls needed supplies and instruments for next day cases or Emergent cases (E-Cases) by utilizing the OR preference cards.

Performs all tasks necessary to prepare and maintain accurate Case Carts Incumbent operates and maintains sterilization equipment, decontamination equipment, and computer systems related to these duties.

The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations is required.

Required Qualifications

* Minimum of one year of previous Sterile Processing technician experience

* Current certification as a Sterile Processing Technician through an accredited organization (CRCST- Certified Registered Central Service Tech, AHCSMM, or Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician CBSPD)

* High School diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience

* Ability operate machinery including sterilizers, washers and ultrasonic cleaners

* Ability to understand, speak, and write English in order to communicate with nursing, technical, and medical staff.

* Ability to safely move heavy trays and equipment, lifting up to 50 pounds, and stand for prolonged periods of time.

* Good communication and customer service skills

* The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations
