SUPERVISOR PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT, EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT

The Supervisor Physician Assistant coordinates or leads other Advanced Practice Providers and perhaps other staff in providing the highest quality, comprehensive, compassionate, ethical, and specialized patient care services for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases within the scope of the PA practice Act in the State of Illinois and under the provision of the licensure of the Attending Physician The individual who holds this position exemplifies the Rush mission, vision and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures, including complying with all Rush University Medical Group Customer Service Standards.



PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



MANAGERIAL

*

Reviews and recommends changes to department policy and procedure in regard to Physician Assistant and potentially other clinical activities in order to increase effectiveness and efficiency of department.
*

Acts as liaison between department and other internal departments and external organizations regarding Physician Assistant and potentially other clinical issues ensuring that patient care is continuously administered in a coordinated, timely and appropriate manner.
*

Coordinate or leads other Physician Assistants, Nurse Practioners and perhaps other staff and may complete any/all of the following: recommends hiring/termination; administers disciplinary action; schedules workload and associated meetings; schedules and/or provides training; completes performance reviews; recommends salary actions; provides mentoring and guidance.
*

May create brochures and literature regarding department services and activities.



PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT

*

Obtains and ensures that all necessary patient information is available as needed. Interviews for medical and social history; conducts physical examinations; obtains HPI, vital signs, etc.
*

Formulates initial diagnosis; drafts and coordinates treatment and care plans; and ensures that tests, procedures, surgeries, etc. are conducted and carried out in a timely basis.
*

Performs necessary associated specialized clinical procedures regarding anesthesia, surgery, medication etc. ensuring regulatory compliance and adherence to all associated guidelines, policies and procedures.
*

Monitors patients on an on-going basis as appropriate including participating in patient rounds; ensuring that discharge plan is completed and home care is coordinated as necessary; assessing current status of patient at all return visits; and completing necessary follow-up clinical tests and procedures.
*

Educates patients and families on diseases, diagnosis, interpretation of tests, treatment and care plans, and possible and expected outcomes. Answers questions and provides on-going consultation and advice throughout the patients treatment.
*

Creates and maintains associated records, outcome measurements, data, and information.
*

May participate in research trials, conduct clinics/seminars, and attend conferences. 12. See Addendum for department specific duties (if applicable).



KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

*

A master s of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS) is required along with ACLS or CPR certification and a current license to practice in the state of Illinois.
*

Experience in medical and physical assessments, medical diagnosis and the development and implementation of patient care plans along with the ability to prescribe medication within the scope of the PA practice Act in the State of Illinois and under the provision of the licensure of the Attending Physician is required.
*

Experience in the specific discipline along with supervisory/managerial experience is preferred.
*

The ability to work collaboratively in an environment including patients, families, physicians, residents, nurses, administrative managers, and support staff is required.
