Job Description

University Hospitals Bedford Medical Center, located in Bedford, Ohio, is a 110-bed, private, nonprofit, full-service, acute-care community hospital. Originally founded in 1908, the hospital has grown through the years to keep pace with an ever-expanding population and demand for high-quality, accessible medical care. Recent additions and enhancements include the addition of the UH Harrington-McLaughlin Heart & Vascular Institute, offering invasive and noninvasive procedures; an MRI suite with separate entrance and parking; the Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine Center; the UH Neurological Institute, offering general neurology services and advanced stroke care; upgraded CT capabilities; expansion of the Emergency Department; and renovations throughout the facility. The medical center also includes an Outpatient Surgery Center.

The Surgical Assistant ('SA') provides care within the perioperative setting. The SA is responsible for assisting in surgery under direct supervision of an attending surgeon and assisting the supervising physician within the supervising physicians normal course of practice to provide quality care for patients and to increase patient access and satisfaction. An SA may not assume the duties or responsibilities that are reserved under the law or the job description of a Physician Assistant.

'Direct Supervision' means supervision by a physician who is physically present and who personally directs the SA's actions and remains immediately available to personally respond to any emergency until the patient is released from the operating room or care has been transferred to another physician.

1. assists in surgery, retracting, suturing, providing hemostasis, handling of tissue, insertion of foley catheters, cast or splint applications.

Prohibited activities include:
1.identifying self, education, or former experience as that of a physician assistant
2. taking call or 'covering' for a physician
3. making notations in a patient family record

Position Requirements:
1-3 years experience as a Surgical Assistant. Demonstration of quality care in prior positions. Uses a wide variety of technical equipment to meet patient care needs. Included in this requirement is an assessment of any claims or litigation against the SA.
Education Requirements:
Completion of associate degree or equivalent program approved by AMA for surgical assisting OR Physician Assistant training from an accredited program with NCCPA certification
License Requirements:
Certification by American Board of Surgeon's Assistants OR Successful completion of an NCCPA accredited Physician's Assistant program. Current BLS required.
