Job Description
Summary of Position:
The System Engineer ITS-II is responsible for the engineering, support and deployment of the standard Windows Desktop at MIT Lincoln Laboratory. As a customer advocate, the System Engineer ensures that the desktop maintains high performance and ease of use. This role also performs limited server administration for systems under the purview of Desktop Engineering. The System Engineer also provides third level support for Windows desktop related issues and researches and develops new technology and tools to support Desktop computing and the Desktop experience.
Primary Duties:
Desktop Configuration Management and Design
a.) Serves as the primary administrator for System Center Configuration Manager.
b.) Plans upgrades and roadmaps for System Center and Desktop Management tools.
c.) Develops process documentation for updates and software deployments.
d.) Determines overall strategy for feature implementation and architecture.
e.) Evaluates tools to facilitate efficient deployment of desktops to enterprise users.
f.) Identifies potential security risks and implements appropriate countermeasures.
g.) Acts as a customer advocate to ensure that the desktop maintains high performance and ease of use.
Windows Server Administration for Desktop Engineering
a.) Serves as the primary administrator for Desktop Engineering servers.
b.) Manages accounts, access rights, and shares for servers.
c.) Performs scheduled maintenance and patching for servers.
Asset Management Support and Reporting
a.) Monitors asset management tools and client activity to ensure accurate reporting.
b.) Develops reports to support the Laboratory's asset management effort.
c.) Generates actions plans for addressing inactive clients and reporting inaccuracies.
d.) Creates custom reports to track IT security issues and compliance status.
3rd level Desktop related Trouble Ticket Support
a.) Serves as the 3rd level escalation path for desktop related support issues.
b.) Develops appropriate Service Desk materials to assist in their ability to troubleshoot issues at the 1st and 2nd level.
c.) Conducts training sessions with 1st and/or 2nd level Service Desk staff on new services and solutions.
Documentation and Training
a.) Develops, publishes, and maintains system documentation according to department standards.
b.) Develops and delivers training for customers and the Service Desk on enhancements or new applications to increase user acceptance.
New Technology Research & Development
a.) Researches new technologies, products and services that can improve the Desktop experience.
b.) Tests new technologies, products and services to determine their feasibility in the Laboratory environment.
c.) Develops strategy and direction of future Standard Desktop versions.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or other technical field, or equivalent relevant work experience.
5 years experience with Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager or Microsoft System Management Server
5 years experience in Windows Desktop management and deployment.
5 years experience in Windows support.
5 years experience with Windows imaging solutions.
2 years experience with Active Directory and Group Policy.
Advanced knowledge of Active Directory, Group Policy, Networking, Security and Windows Server and other Microsoft and third-party enterprise technologies.
Working knowledge of VBScript, Batch or other scripting or programming languages.
Excellent customer service skills.
Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP)(Preferred)
Ability to obtain and maintain a Government Security Clearance.
