Seeking an experienced Systems Engineer III with Windows and VMware focus to contribute to a team responsible for all functions associated with the daily operations of the Laboratory’s IT infrastructure including the configuration, monitoring, and daily operational support of Windows and VMware systems. In addition to the Windows Operating System, this individual should be well versed in the management of Windows Active Directory including group policy, user/group management, security configuration and ancillary services such as NPS, DNS, and WINS. This individual will be primarily responsible for supporting the classified services offered by ISD. The ideal candidate is interested in learning new technologies, delivering high quality services, and turning concepts into services. This position will work closely with both internal IT and research staff. This position will rotate through ha 24x7 on-call assignment, and occasional off-hour support is necessary. As a result, a certain degree of flexibility of schedule is required as some work must be done outside of major production hours during pre-scheduled maintenance windows. This position reports to the server, Storage, and Backups Team Lead in the Information Services Department.

Primary Duties:

Service Engineering and Project Support (45%):

75% of this duty will be performed in a classified work environment.
Assists in the evaluation of new tools, services or products as well as enhancements to existing processes, products, and services.
Support project initiatives through capturing of user requirements, prototyping, systems design, and validation.
Develops, publishes and maintains system documentation (e.g. Requirements, Design/Build, Testing, and SOP) according to department standards

Day-to-day support for all aspects of the Windows and VMware systems (40%):

75% of this duty will be performed in a classified work environment.
Duties include support for Operating systems software, security compliance, maintenance, hardware break/fix, and performance troubleshooting.
Perform Windows operating system builds, upgrades, patches and optimization in both physical and virtual environments,
Identify and implement best practices to increase automation, security, reliability, and systems performance.
Perform Root cause analysis and provide recommendations to improve efficiencies and resolve problems within supported environments.

Administrative Duties (15%):

Develops, publishes, and maintains system documentation (e.g. Requirements, Design/Build, Testing, and SOP) according to department standards.
Develops and delivers training for peers and/or end users on service features, enhancements, or new applications to increase service adoption and usage.
Other duties as required.

This position is under the direction of the Server, Storage and Backups Team Lead

This position does not have direct financial responsibility. However technical expertise may be required for assisting with product selection and annual product support renewals.

This position will maintain frequent contact with internal department and/or Laboratory user community as well as external vendors to maintain communications related to problem resolution, systems upgrades, services and product research.


Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or other related scientific or technical discipline.
Experience supporting Windows Server 2008-2012 and Active Directory. To include installation, upgrade, configuration, monitoring, troubleshooting, and security hardening.
Experience supporting VMware to include host and vCenter configuration and patching and VM provisioning.
8+ years of technical IT experience supporting Windows systems.
Demonstrated experience supporting projects with increasing levels of responsibility.
Experience suporting Microsoft File Services. Including supporting and resolving file ACL problems.
Strong knowledge of core networking protocols or applications (e.g. DNS, NTP, DHCP, SNMP, TCP/IP, SSH, FTS, HTTP(s), LDAP, WINS, SSL/TLS, NFS, CIFS).
Ability to program in an admiistrative language (e.g. Perl, Python, Shell Scripts, VB, Powershell) to automate basic processes.
Work closely with key vendors and escalate problems as necessary to meet support level agreements.
Experience maintaining documentation of processes, procedures, troubleshooting guides and change management logs.
Ability to learn new technologies and disciplines quickly.
Excellent customer service skills (verbal and written) required.
Security+ Certification or ability to achieve within 6 months of hiring required.
Microsoft of VMware Certification or ability to achieve within 6 months of hiring required.
Ability to obtain and maintain a government security clearance required.
ITIL v3 Foundations Certification pfreferred.
Working knowledge of DoD networks and NIST 800-53 security controls a plus.
