JOB DESCRIPTION

GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

Under Principal Investigator supervision, and within established departmental and hospital policies and procedures, the research assistant will be responsible for performing a range of experiments to investigate pulmonary vascular function. Experiments will involve cultured cells and rodent models. Responsibilities may include maintaining cell culture systems and rodent colonies, generating models of pulmonary hypertension, physiologic characterization of rodents, preparation of samples from cultured cells and animals, and analysis of these samples using a variety of approaches. Within budget constraints, will order supplies and initiate equipment purchases. Will assist in the preparation of reports used by other laboratory members in lab meetings. May also provide support to other related projects when needed.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Maintaining cultured cells, performing treatments (including gene silencing or overexpression using siRNA or viruses), and sample preparation.

* Analyzing RNA, DNA, and protein samples from animal tissue or cells (including RT-qPCR, Western blots, enzyme assays).

* Assisting in the design and modification of assays and research protocols, including those involving rodent models.

* Maintaining accurate records of all experiments, compiling data and performing statistical analyses on results as required.

* Initiating purchases of new supplies and equipment and maintaining adequate supplies in lab.

* Maintaining laboratory safety records as necessary.

* Maintaining a clean and orderly work area, contributing to routine lab maintenance and cleaning.

* Other duties as assigned by the principal investigator.

QUALIFICATIONS:

* Bachelor's degree in biological / physical sciences.

* Experience with one or more of the following: cell culture, protein analysis, or molecular biology.

* Experience working with small animals (rats and mice).

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

* Reliable.

* Organized, meticulous, and with careful attention to detail.

* Good technical skills (pipetting, operating equipment).

* Self-directed learning and able to work independently.

* Good oral and written communication skills.

* Computer literacy (proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel and Powerpoint).

* Comfortable working with animals.
