GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

Under supervision of Director and Principal Investigators in accordance with established hospital policies and procedures and specific instructions, she/he will perform routine and non-routine laboratory procedures, record tests, assist in laboratory management, and maintain equipment in working order.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under supervision, she/he will primarily perform histological assays, which include tissue embedding, cryosectioning, immunohistochemical staining, and cutting-edge computer-assisted color image analysis. May also perform a variety of experiments (e.g., cell cultures, extraction of DNA, RNA, and proteins, RT-PCR, Western blotting, ELISA, cell sorting, FACS, sample preparations for proteomics) following established protocols and methodologies. May also assist in maintaining mouse colonies and various in vivo experiments. Will maintain equipment and supplies in a neat and orderly manner. Will maintain basic records of methodologies and findings in a lab notebook. Will identify unusual findings and report them to the supervisor(s). Will participate in compliance with regulatory agencies and local hospital safety surveys and procedures including radiation surveys and chemical inventories.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor of Science degree in biological science preferred.


SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

Must have sound understanding of laboratory policies, procedures and sterile technique. Prior experience in histology is advantageous but not essential. Must be well organized, have good manual dexterity, and understand cross-cultural differences. May be exposed to hazardous chemicals in a controlled environment.
