Job Description

Summary:

Ensures compliance with governmental requirements relating to transaction taxes (sales and use, VAT, GST/PST/HST/QST) and financial statement reporting of such taxes



Required Skills

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



* Reviews exemption certificates for sufficiency and directs as to applicable taxes may be omitted from sales and jobs

* Maintains and updates all exemption certificates, active and expired, for retrieval for audit support

* Provides information to external preparers needed for preparation of sales and use tax returns

* Reviews all transaction tax returns submitted by external preparers and internal staff of foreign entities and notifies the tax director of any issues or concerns

* Performs tax research on transaction taxes to ensure taxability tables are up to date

* Assists in implementation of a sales tax engine in conjunction with any ERP system implementation

* Reviews all job set ups submissions to ensure that correct sales tax has been included ; reviews all job proposals over $500,000 to ensure that correct sales tax has been included.

* Reviews tax exception reports from online proposal generator, investigates the reasons and provides direction as to the appropriateness of same

* Reviews daily the previous day s exempt sales to ensure that the necessary exemption documentation is on file and if not works independently and with others to obtain necessary documentation, failing which instructs that sales tax be billed

* Provides support to the sales force on individual matters that arise regarding sales tax

* Ensures that internal systems for charging transaction taxes are operating correctly and regularly tests for same

* Periodically updates research regarding the taxability of the products and services provided by the company

* Provides some counseling regarding transaction tax issues

* Reviews fixed asset acquisition records to ensure that documentation of payment of applicable transaction taxes is maintained for audit

* Assists in the periodic reconciliation of all company transaction tax accounts

* Acts in a supporting role with respect to all tax and financial statement audits in matters concerning transaction taxes

* Assists with any special projects as requested by the Tax Director

Skills and Abilities:

* Demonstrated experience with research and information gathering, including the ability to quickly gather data in a short timeframe on a wide variety of topics

* Strong mathematical skills.

* Must be able to operate 10-key calculators, computer and other electronic supportive equipment to perform calculations and produce documents

* Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry; ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations

* Read, interpret and apply complex technical documentation

* Analyze, evaluate and integrate business processes and procedures

* Ability to write logical, comprehensive, concise reports and correspondence

* Ability to balance multiple tasks with changing priorities

* Ability to work and think independently and ensuring to meet deadlines

* Demonstrated ability to maintain strict confidentiality and handle sensitive matters with discretion

* Excellent attention to detail

* Must have clear and professional communication skills (written and oral) both internally and externally

* Effective communication and interaction with employees, clients, and colleagues and the ability to work effectively with all levels of the organization

* Demonstrated customer service focus and client communication skills

* Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information

Experience and/or Education:

* Minimum of High School Diploma or equivalent

* Bachelor s Degree (BA/BS) in Accounting or related field required

* Minimum 3-5 years of Tax Accounting and Tax compliance experience

* Demonstrated experience in tax software and enterprise reporting systems

* Excellent PC skills, proficient in Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
