POSITION SUMMARY:

The technical specialist is a technical expert in one area and performs all technical skills in their laboratory division. Technical specialists are responsible for day-to-day technical supervision of the division and participating in the management of the laboratory as a whole.



















MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1.

Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology or a related science such as Microbiology, Biology, or Chemistry.

2.

Licensed as a Laboratory Technologist in the state of West Virginia within 90 days of employment.





















PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1.

Certification as a Medical Technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or National Certification Agency (NCA) preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

1.

Four years of experience as a Medical Technologist in the appropriate specialty preferred.

Bachelor s degree in Cytotechnology.

2.

Licensed by the state of West Virginia within 90 days of employment.

3.

EXPERIENCE:

1.

Three years experience as a Cytotechnologist in the preceding ten years.

Two years supervisory experience preferred.







CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. 1.

Assists the Manager in the staffing of the laboratory sections and divisions to assure appropriate personnel coverage to perform the functions of the laboratory in support of the hospital mission.

2.

Provides input in the evaluation of the staff for promotions, salary adjustments, annual performance appraisals, disciplinary actions, and termination s based on documented performance within time frames established by the institution.

3.

Provides timely orientation of new staff, utilizing WVUH orientation check list and following the Laboratory policies, and documented in the employee personnel file.

4.

Reviews reports (e.g., workload, budget, etc.) to assure accuracy, make recommendations, and initiates appropriate action as required.

5.

Schedules laboratory personnel and adjusts staffing patterns to ensure adequate staff coverage of all divisions as required by work flow and work volume.

6.

Compiles, reviews, and/or coordinates the collection of accurate laboratory data as required for the operation of the laboratory.

7.

Supervises and coordinates the technical activities of the laboratory staff in the laboratory division in support of quality laboratory service and in support of the hospital mission of patient care.

8.

Analyzes and evaluates test results for validity and accuracy on a daily basis, identifying unusual patient data and determines if test results should be reported, repeated, or referred to Medical Director(s).

9.

Performs division procedures and operates division equipment/instrumentation according to standard operating procedures insuring timely and accurate result reporting.

10.

Provides accurate written and/or verbal technical interpretation of results, under the direction of the Medical Director(s) where necessary.

11.

Orders, receives, and stores appropriate levels of all necessary reagents, supplies and equipment to carry out the division responsibilities.

12.

Modifies, develops, and suggests alternate methodologies for maintenance of patient services with consultation and approval by the Manager and Medical Director.

13.

Responsible for the development, evaluation and maintenance (e.g. accuracy, completeness, up to date) of all procedure manuals in their division under the direction of the Medical Director.

14.

Plans, develops, evaluates and implements new test procedures under the direction of the Medical Director.

15.

Must demonstrate, after receiving instruction and training, knowledge of the patient care requirements for all age groups as required by the laboratory standard operating procedures.

16.

Maintains effective communication with the laboratory divisions, administrative office, Medical Director(s), patients and other departments as necessary to assure identification of problems and provide problem resolution in support of the hospital's mission of patient care.

17.

Monitors communication/documentation logs for legibility and accuracy.

18.

Develops and reviews quality assurance and quality control procedures to ascertain the reliability of reagents and laboratory equipment/instrumentation to assure timely, accurate, reproducible test data insuring quality patient care.

19.

Supervises the implementation, operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment/ instrumentation including calibration and troubleshooting.

20.

Reviews and evaluates patient and quality control reports for legibility, completeness, accuracy, and appropriateness, in conjunction with the Medical Director(s).

21.

Reviews and evaluates quality control records and test results to determine analytical errors, shifts, trends and correlation of data with common physiological conditions to assure quality patient test results.

22.

Organizes time, materials and resources in an economical manner, prioritizing laboratory requests by assessing and adjusting workload in all sections within the division to provide for optimal patient care and efficiency.

23.

Participates in the technical and theoretical instruction, supervision, and evaluation of resident and students of the

School of

Medicine and other health care professionals established by laboratory policies (eg. Laboratory objectives, evaluation forms).

24.

Displays initiative and responsibility for personal and staff growth by a attending workshops, reading professional journals, attending seminars, giving in services, etc., as needed, and demonstrating a commitment to maintaining expertise in a given discipline.

25.

Actively participates in a nationally recognized professional society (specific to area of expertise).
