Position Summary
A skilled individual, who with minimum supervision assists with installation and testing of telecommunications and data network systems. Installs telephones, interfacing devices, and physical installation of network and server equipment. Assist with the installation, monitoring and maintenance of WAN links. With training, able to pass certification test to program phone installs on the PBX. Some installations may require snaking and pulling of copper or fiber media above ceilings, in racks or below a raised floor. May assist with the operation and maintenance of videoconferencing equipment. Lifting and transporting of network, server, and electronic test equipment is routinely required.
Primary Duties
Installs, troubleshoots, or modifies networking equipment and related racking, interfaces and cabling.
Completes appropriate connections and verifies end-end integrity of network links.
Performs moves, adds, and changes to telecommunications and network hardware including secure telephones.
Installation, problem diagnosis and maintain telecommunications WAN links (copper, fiber optic).
Assists with coordination of vendor/carrier installation/maintenance activities.
Maintains circuit inventory and network connection databases.
Performs moves, adds, and changes to server or systems in a data center/rack environment.
Must be able to lift moderately heavy (e.g. 50 lbs) equipment and place into relay racks.
Occasional off-hours nights or weekend support to meet project or operational uptime requirements.
Qualifications
Graduation from a two year technical day school or its equivalent is required.
A minimum of five years of hands-on experience with Avaya/Nortel data and telephony products is desirable.
A minimum of one years of hands-on experience with Juniper data products is desirable.
Demonstrated progress in attaining a Nortel Certified Support Specialist (NCSS) credential (or Avaya equivalent) with resident or online courses in Call Pilot and CS-1000 installation and maintenance (or Avaya equivalent)(desired).
Experience working in a communications carrier or large enterprise environment is required.
Proficiency with T3/T1 circuit test equipment, network testers and fiber optic test equipment is required.
Strong written and verbal customer communications skills are required.
Proficiency in Avaya/Nortel PBX programming and familiarity with Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Excel and Visio) and Ticket Management (e.g. Numara) applications are desired.
