Job Description

Training and Instruction Manager - Memphis Teaching Fellows/Tennessee Practitioner Teacher Program
Memphis, TN

The New Teacher Project (TNTP) helps school districts and states fulfill the promise of public education by ensuring that all students"especially those from high-need communities"get excellent teachers. A national nonprofit organization founded by teachers, TNTP recognizes that although teachers matter more than any other school factor in student success, the nation s education systems are not aligned with the goal of an effective teacher in every classroom. In response, TNTP develops customized programs and policy interventions that enable education leaders to diagnose their teacher quality challenges and find, develop and keep great teachers. Since its inception in 1997, TNTP has recruited or trained approximately 33,000 teachers"mainly through its highly selective Teaching Fellows programs"benefiting an estimated 4.8 million students. TNTP has also released a series of acclaimed studies of the policies and practices that affect the quality of the nation s teacher workforce, most recently including The Widget Effect: Our National Failure to Acknowledge and Act on Differences in Teacher Effectiveness (2009). Today TNTP is active in more than 25 cities, including Baltimore, Chicago, Denver, New Orleans, New York, and Oakland, among others. For more information, please visit www.tntp.org.

We are currently seeking a Training and Instruction Manager for our Memphis Teaching Fellows/Tennessee Practitioner Teacher Program. The Training and Instruction Manager will be TNTP employee based in the Memphis Public Schools office. This position is available October 2011 with the possibility of an earlier start date.

The Program

Memphis Teaching Fellows (MTF) is a high quality alternate route into the classroom for outstanding career changers from a variety of backgrounds who commit to teach in high-need schools. Through a rigorous summer Training Institute, a cohort of approximately 75 Fellows (with the potential to add an additional 60 Fellows) prepares to begin teaching in classrooms in Memphis City Schools each fall. Please visit the MTF website for additional information about the program at www.memphisteachingfellows.org.
.
In order to facilitate the entry of the highest qualified teaching candidates for hard-to-staff positions and to create an expedited plan for their certification, The New Teacher Project partnered with Memphis City Schools (MCS) in 2010 to establish an alternative certification program, called the Tennessee Practitioner Teacher Program (TNPTP), to certify 75 Memphis Teaching Fellows. Participants teach in Memphis City Schools, in schools where they are most needed. Following a rigorous summer training institute, they teach full-time while participating in the Teaching for Results Seminar Series.

Teaching for Results develops a teacher s knowledge and ability to teach specific content while supporting a standards-based planning approach as a means to significantly raise student achievement levels within city schools.

Fellows will earn certification by completing TNTP s Teaching for Results seminar series during their first year in the classroom and by completing our Assessment of Classroom Effectiveness (ACE) screen. Our program is distinguished from other alternative route programs by the quality of its pre-service training and year-long professional development program, as well as our focus on making certification decisions based on performance in the classroom and ability to impact student achievement.

As a result of their successful completion of all PTP requirements in Memphis, participants are eligible to receive their transitional teaching license from the Tennessee State Department of Education.
