The University of California, Merced is the newest and tenth campus of the University of California system and the first American research university built in the 21st century. Under the direction of the Natural Sciences Director of Student Services, the Undergraduate and Pre-Health Professions Advisor assists UCM students who are preparing for postgraduate study in health-related fields through their studies at UC Merced. This includes advising students about which UCM courses will best fulfill admissions requirements; providing information and resources to students pertaining to health professions program admissions; offers limited career counselling and advising with regards to health careers and professions; and assistance with admission processes and documentation.
The Undergraduate and Pre-health Advisor, working in conjunction with other NS School Advisors will provide academic advising for prospective and current students in the School s programs. The Advisor works closely with Natural Sciences Advisors, faculty and other campus academic advisors in the planning, development, and implementation of a coordinated and comprehensive academic advising program for new freshmen, continuing and transfer students. The incumbent will interpret and explain University and School policies and procedures relevant to undergraduate programs; provide a welcoming atmosphere for students into the School and direct them to appropriate University resources. The individual will advise and counsel individuals with unique and/or confidential problems, and arrange specialized help for students as needed through other support services within the University.
This position works independently and makes professional judgements about complex issues without direct guidance from, though with consultation with, their supervisor. Will supervise student assistants and/or teams of student assistants.
Bachelor's degree in related area with 2-3 years of equivalent experience/training required.
Master's degree in Counseling, Student Affairs Education preferred.
Thorough knowledge of advising and counseling techniques, for both individual and group settings required.
Thorough knowledge and familiarity with career counseling or career advising techniques required.
Thorough knowledge of college/school policies, procedures and requirements required.
Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving required.
Abilities in problem identification, reasoning, ability to develop original ideas to solve problems required.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including active listening required.
Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment with multiple competing deadlines required.
Demonstrated skill in Banner SIS or other student information system.
Demonstrated experience with Darwin, DARS, u.achieve or MyAudit.
Knowledge of policies and procedures relating to the health professions admissions.
Demonstrated fluency in using a computer and office software packages to include Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
