JOB DESCRIPTIONAPPLY JOB SUMMARY
The Department of Chemistry is seeking talented and highly motivated undergraduates to fill positions as Undergraduate Instructional Assistants Type 2 (UIA-II), commonly titled Peer Leaders (PLs) for the CHE 295 Organic Chemistry Excel I program. PLs lead small groups of students through problem sets developed by the Academic Coordinator to help their group learn how to solve problems in organic chemistry (CHE 230). PLs function more like coaches than teachers or TAs. Problem sets for each chapter in the lecture course are provided to the PL and their group to work during the weekly meeting. The only criteria for students to pass the Workshop course are attendance and full participation at every session. PLs are to maintain the utmost standard of responsibility, integrity, and professionalism while in this position. PLs in the Organic Chemistry Excel I program are assigned a course section in CHE 295 as determined by the Academic Coordinator, dependent upon availability of all Peer Leaders. The position requires a full-semester, weekly commitment at the course meeting time, weekly PL meetings, as well as any necessary preparation needed by the individual PLs each week, averaging approximately 5 hours per week time commitment per section assigned.
PLs are responsible for the monitoring of a maximum of 8 to 10 students, under the supervision of the Academic Coordinator for Organic Excel. PLs are expected to work all problem sets in advance of their weekly workshop, facilitate group discussions, answer student questions in person and online (via email, or other methods), record attendance, and assist with keeping records of student attendance via the course Learning Management site and in a secure hard copy under the direct supervision of the Academic Coordinator(s) using materials provided by the Academic Coordinator. All PLs receive specific training on the attendance and other course policies. All records are spot checked and any discrepancies and disputes are resolved by the Academic Coordinator. All final grades are determined by the Academic Coordinator.
PLs are required to attend the one-hour weekly PL meeting and participate in PL orientation activities prior to the beginning of the term. Orientation activities include, but are not limited to, learning about UK Student Services including: 1) Counseling Center Services (and Dealing with Distressed Students) 2) Students with Disabilities 3) Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) 4) Violence Intervention and Prevention (VIP) and 5) Discrimination and Harassment.
PLs are in a paid, hourly position and are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner. PLs are expected to participate in professional development sessions, including PL meetings, performance evaluations, entering weekly working time online, and other duties as assigned, for which they will be compensated.
