Required Education:
Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, or related field. Four (4) years of additional experience beyond that required may be used in lieu of the experience requirement.
Required Experience:
Five (5) years of lending experience, to include at least three (3) years of underwriting experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Knowledge of basic lending and underwriting policies and procedures, including guidelines issued by FNMA, FHLMC, FHA, VA, USDA, and Mortgage Insurance Companies.
- Knowledge of all federal and state regulations regarding lending and related departments.
- Knowledge of current lending rates on various loan options.
- Exceptional analytical skills and the ability to think critically.
- Good mathematical skills and the ability to accurately evaluate financial information and valuations.
- Assessment skills and the ability to review information in complete detail.
- Good communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.

Job Description:
Job Summary:
Review residential loan files and determine the accuracy and acceptability of credit, income, assets, and collateral. Ensure the overall loan documentation is complete and meets all underwriting requirements.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:
Receive loan files originated by the financial institution and review files for all necessary forms and information according to FNMA (Federal National Mortgage Association) and FHLMC (Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation), FHA (Federal Housing Administration, VA (Veteran's Administration), USDA (United States Department of Agriculture), mortgage insurance companies, and private investor underwriting guidelines.
Analyze applicant s financial status, credit and property evaluation to determine feasibility of loan granting.
Utilize an Automated Underwriting System (AUS) and/or pre-determined guidelines to underwrite mortgage loan files; analyze, review, and compare data against AUS decisions and pre-determined guidelines; confirm or override AUS decision based on available information.
Provide justification, and document explanations and extenuating circumstances resulting in override decisions.
Comply with all established policies and guidelines governing the review, analysis, and processing of mortgage loan files.
Confer with loan officer and/or loan processor to aid in resolving mortgage application problems.
Communicate with mortgage loan officer, loan processor, and/or the customer to resolve questions and underwrite files properly.
Keep informed of current underwriting practices and may assist in updating the financial institution s underwriting policies.
Conduct audits of loan files prior to and after funding is obtained.
Prepare records and reports as requested regarding loan file activity.
Each team member is expected to be aware of risk within their functional area. This includes observing all policies, procedures, laws, regulations and risk limits specific to their role. Additionally, they should raise and report known or suspected violations to the appropriate Company authority in a timely fashion.
Perform other related duties as required.
