Unit Mgr LD / MC - Family Centered Maternity Care
Assumes overall responsibility for the Family Centered Maternity Care (FCMC) department.
According to the Department's Scope of Practice, this position requires the demonstration of professionalism in the leadership and management of services delivered to the obstetrical patient from menses through menopause during the labor, delivery and postpartum stages. This position also requires the management of services to the patient's newborn through delivery, transition, and stabilization in a Single Room Maternity Care (SRMC) setting. The nurse in this position is also capable of delivering, supporting, or delegating care to gynecological, neonatal, and pediatric patients in a manner that demonstrates an understanding of the functional /developmental age of the individuals served. The individual in this position is responsible for meeting client's Hospital Standards of Nursing Practice, for managing all personnel, supplies and equipment on the Unit, for promoting harmonious team participation with physicians and personnel of other departments. Subject to irregular hours. Ability to function in a stressful environment.
Responsible for the functional management of the Labor and Delivery/Newborn Nursery Units by maintaining a standard of nursing care that satisfies the requirements of hospital philosophy, policy and procedure and legal nursing care needs of the unit, and performs the primary functions of a professional nurse leader.
Assists in developing departmental budget.
Monitor budget with concern for appropriate responsible use of resources.
Promotes a safe working environment that allows for the delivery of high quality patient care.
Monitors the use and stocking of supplies assuring adequate supply without overstocking or wastage.
Responsible for maintaining accurate time sheets on all employees and submitting them to payroll in a timely manner.
Assumes responsibility for the employment, orientation, evaluation, and discipline of the employees on the Labor and Delivery/Newborn Nursery Units. Promotes growth and development of individual employees and harmonious relationships and positive attitudes among the staff.
Courteously interviews applicants in a nondiscriminatory manner.
Commitment to planning and supervising the orientation of new employees.
Promotes growth and development of employees and is responsible for annual evaluations
Establishes and implements unit goals, objectives with nursing administration goals and objectives. Acts as liaison between Nursing Administration and Medical Staff.
Has input in the annual review and revision of Job Descriptions and Performance Appraisals.
Identifies staff education needs, arranges in-services.
Establishes and maintains communication between the Nursing Unit and Ancillary departments for the purpose of problem solving.
Conducts monthly staff meetings; transmits information regarding policy, changes, etc.
Assists with responsibility for maintaining a standard of nursing care that satisfies the requirements of hospital philosophy, policy and procedure and legal nursing practice. Provides a staffing pattern appropriate to the nursing care needs of the Labor and Delivery/Newborn Nursery Units.
Ensures that nursing standards and practices are developed and met.
Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety environmental and infection controls standards.
Commitment to providing staffing pattern appropriate to the Labor and Delivery Unit.
Monitors all high risk and complicated cases and institutes appropriate actions.
Protects patient confidentiality by promoting professional staff communications.
Performs the primary functions of a professional nurse leader.
Knowledgeable of hospital philosophy, policies and procedures. Supports and adheres to them in a positive manner.
Serves on hospital and nursing committees. Attends hospital in-services.
Assumes responsibility for self regarding knowledge of policies, manuals, and communications. Takes responsibility for self growth and job improvements.
Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
Management Experience preferred. Two years in hospital setting, one of which must be in the specialty.
Licenses, Registrations or Certifications
Current RN licensure - State of Louisiana
NRP within 6 months of employment
Required FCMC education
Basic Fetal Monitoring Course; within 6 months of practice complete Intermediate Course
Nonsmokers preferred; or ability to work extended shifts without smoking including during lunches and breaks
