Varian Information Systems Engineer
Overview: Varian Medical Systems Information Technology department will be adding a windows systems engineer to address our demand in the area of Electronic Discovery (eDiscovery). This engineer position will join a core group of collaborative systems engineers who maintain, design, and support a disparate portfolio of applications and technologies including but not limited to authentication services, Active Directory, messaging, unified communications, mobility and various business applications commonly running on Microsoft platforms. The eDiscovery engineer will be responsible for four core facets within the infrastructure portfolio eDiscovery Policy & Procedures, eDiscovery archiving, oversee/maintain support of corporate department technology and applications, and associated citrix support. This broad role, reporting to the Manager of Windows Services and Applications Environment, offers a powerful opportunity to modernize the technical direction at Varian Medical Systems for eDiscovery and archiving solutions as well as the opportunity to define process and procedures, influence global policy, and drive discoverability integration throughout the global technology landscape. More specifically, the role s responsibilities include:
- Strategic Responsibilities: In this role the viable candidate will need to be able to develop strong partnership relationships with:
o Our corporate legal organization to ensure legal requirements and country regulations and legal demands are understood and incorporated
o Information security and data privacy team to ensure archiving scopes and approaches are in alignment with governance and regional policies as well as any data classification standards which drive discoverability requirements
o Project management and architecture services to identify new technologies as they are forecasted for discoverability requirements
o Develop and maintain the legal eDiscovery scope and roadmap so as to set a well-known inventory of systems that are subject to the eDiscovery policies along with retention period requirements

- Project Responsibilities: As new technology projects are planned this role will need to review the technology function being proposed and collect requirements to determine inclusion demands into the overall archiving and discovery portfolio. Document why the records being produced by the technology are or are not included into the framework and maintain that inventory through the lifecycle of the technology.

- Operational Responsibilities: the successful candidate will have very high levels of visibility when requests are made from the organization. These requests are by nature unplanned, urgent, and dynamic in nature. To be successful the candidate needs to:

o Be able to develop operational processes and procedures for managing discovery cases, Internal HR investigations, and legal matters involving discovery requirements. As these matters are sensitive professional decorum and confidentiality must be demonstrated. In addition to developing the process and procedures the candidate must also release this process in a way which can leverage VIT personnel regionally to carry out the procedures as assigned and where appropriate.
o Manage and design the archiving technology within a core windows based network (Exchange, SharePoint, File Shares, windows PCs, etc.) and business apps commonly running on Microsoft platforms. However, it is critical that building out and maintaining the discovery scope/inventory that being able to work with SME s outside of the Microsoft stack will be critical.
o Own and maintain the core architecture of the eDiscovery solutions (chiefly Symantec Enterprise Vault) and services and develop the technical roadmap to support the business eDiscovery roadmap requirements
o Define monitoring demands of the platform and drive out defects from within the environment
o Technical capability to design platform solutions to support scalability and reliability within framework of vendor specifications

Job Requirements
Minimum Required Skills and Knowledge:
Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to consult effectively with business application owners to design solutions. Strong problem solving and analytical skills. Proficient in utilizing business tools such as: E-mail, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Job Requirements: Specific training, skills and experience needed to perform the job typically requires eight (8) years experience in senior level technology design and support within an enterprise of over 6000 employees.
- Required:
o At least 5 years of implementation and escalation support of common three tier Microsoft centric application platforms (Web front end, application, and MSSQL servers)
o Solid understanding of Symantec Enterprise Vault application environments and tools, device limitations and challenges, available communication infrastructures
o At least 2-5 years of Citrix administration (XenApp and/or XenDesktop)
o Knowledgeable in email services from Microsoft Exchange including journaling technologies from Exchange as it relates to Symantec Enterprise Vault; at least 2 years and at least one major version upgrade of exchange under Enterprise Vault archiving
o 5 years of IT experience in architecting and developing enterprise business applications
o Ability to understand business needs and translate them to technology solutions
o Ability to work in a team and motivate others
o Strong communication, organization, problem solving and diagnostics skills
Ability to communicate up, down, and across the organization is paramount to this role s success and impact within the company
o Proven ability to transfer knowledge and stay aware of current trends and technical advancements
- Experience in these areas a plus:
o Knowledge of the basic concepts of document management and experience with LiveLink, SharePoint, or other document management applications as it relates to discoverability
o Encase technologies
o Creating and releasing an eDiscovery technology program and developing a legal sponsored solution
o Experience integrating third party collection solutions into Symantec Enterprise Vault
o Maintaining enterprise file sharing solutions like Box Enterprise
